The Pathless

The Pathless is developed by Giant Squid and published by Annapurna Interactive. It released on November 12, 2020, for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, with Nintendo Switch and Xbox versions following on February 2, 2023. From the creators of Abzû, players become the Hunter, a master archer who travels to a mystical island to break a supernatural curse threatening the world.

The Pathless builds its exploration around fluid, uninterrupted momentum rather than traditional open-world navigation. Since the team deliberately removed the mini-map feature, players must read the environment itself to find their way forward. Consequently, a fast, seamless movement system replaces fast travel entirely, letting the Hunter chain sprints, jumps, and bow shots into one continuous flow across the island.

Combat and traversal intertwine through the game’s archery system, which allows effortless shooting while moving at high speed. As a result, players can perform acrobatic trick shots against corrupted spirits without breaking their momentum. Furthermore, the Hunter’s growing bond with her eagle companion unlocks new traversal abilities over time, deepening both the mechanical and emotional core of the adventure. Since collecting all 57 lightstones and four gifts of the Tall Ones unlocks a special post-credits scene, thorough exploration rewards players who take their time with the island’s many secrets.
