Crytek Vows To Make All Its Games Free To Play

Crytek, famous for AAA title such as Far Cry and Crysis in addition to their top-notch CryEngine, has decided to make all its future titles free to play.

“Right now we are in the transitional phase of our company, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience,” Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli explained. “What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we’re working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development.”

The studio’s transition period will be over soon once all of its current contractual obligations are fulfilled. Needless to say, Crysis 3 will be sold at full retail price.

Just a way to combat piracy,

Just a way to combat piracy, I mean what did you expect the gaming industry to do? Keep producing game for people to steal? Crysis 2 lost over 4 million copies do to piracy, So now enjoy your 2 maps and 2 guns unless you want to buy the whole thing, Free to play is a good thing, FFS so sick a people complaining that they can't return a game they bought cause it sucked. Now you get a good demo , a chance to try before you buy. Personally I think media design industries waited too long to do something about piracy, now you got the pirates bitch about DRM implementation. These assholes been stealing and downloading games so long they think they have some right to bitch about DRM lmao. Look its simple, No profits coming in means no incentives to continue deigning games means no more games.

Flaws in your Logic

The point you are Missing is, that people usually pirate games because they dont have money to spare for it. No income is lost in this case. So what could the Devs do in this case? Lower the costs so that more people could buy it, everyone would take advantage of that. The gamer would get cheaper games and might buy more games, the Dev would get more cash because of more copies sold (in a world of digital downloads there arent real costs of production anymore anyway) and some other devs might get addidional saves cause there is more cash to spare on a second game.

"Crysis 2 lost over 4 million copies do to piracy" ask them who has the cash to buy crysis 2 and think its good enough to be bought and you could have the "lost copies to piracy".

Personally i think media design industries are still blind for the real solution and are still justifying loss incomes due to poor quality of products with piracy, which is pretty stupid.

Not a huge loss at the end of

Not a huge loss at the end of the day...Crytek weren't exactly one of the great developers of our time, what with their poorly optimized and boring tech-demo-disguised-as-games. The crappiest FPS's from ten years ago are more interesting than anything they've ever done.

Idiots don't make it from

Idiots don't make it from middle class to millionaires by starting a company and working hard in what is mostly intellectual work (software development). Making bad decisions doesnt equate being an idiot, and bad decisions won't lead you towards success. That pretty much invalidates the OP's points and yours.

And why do people think that

And why do people think that programming is some amazingly difficult thing only geniuses can understand? I've been programming since I was six for gods sake, and making games since I was 8. Having a collage qualification in programming guarantees you've mastered something a child can do and refused to move on. And what does being intellectual work have to do making 'easy' money? I never said anything remotely like that. Freakin' strawman arguments...

Umm... no it's not? Computer

Umm... no it's not? Computer Science and Research are intellectual fields. Software Development is vocational - as soon as you've become a programmer or other class of developer, you've entered a vocational field - not an intellectual one. Not only that, but have you met any software developers? For each one that actually knows what they're doing, there's 8 million idiots with a piece of paper that couldn't problem solve their way out of a paper bag.

hurr hurr this is the

hurr hurr this is the internet and you dont know if the guy is rich or not. Notice he started his post with "as I said before", implying that he posted here before about the same subject. Millionaires don't waste much time fooling around on the web (at least the ones who worked to become rich, the ones who inherit wealth may or may not be lazy bitches), they have better ways to spend their time like hiring top dollar prostitutes and enjoying things most people can't.

You seem to have very much

You seem to have very much knowledge about the inner working habits of millionaires and yet, here you are fooling around on the web wasting your time away.

I think you're just a hater. Yes, you hate yourself and wish you could be rich. At the very least richer than what you are presently. However, you know you won't ever be able to achieve your life long dream due to the fact you spend way too much time replying to random people on the internet.

Come to think of it, I don't think I'll ever be a millionaire ever either. I guess that makes us both the same. Nice to meet you brother.

Free to Play = Pay to Win

WTF is happening to the gaming industry... Free to Play is ruining the industry! Unless you don't pay, you'll have a really bad gaming experience, because it'll turn into Pay to Win. No one wants to keep forking out cash for a game, because they'll then loose track and realise they've spent ALOT for a game.

Can't believe FarCry is going in this direction... terrible terrible mistake. RIP good games forever

Crytek made the original

Crytek made the original farcry, however they sold the IP to ubisoft and went on to make crysis. Ubisoft was always about money to begin with, its no surprise that they're headed in that direction.

Free to play - with 2 maps

Free to play - with 2 maps and underpowered weapons and no character customisation. With about 12 $15 add-on packs. I remember when games had everything in the box, maybe a $20 expansion pack with a whole new game on top of it released a few months later :/ It was a full experience, not a gimped one.

Pointless

Crytek makes most of its money from licensing their engines to other devs not from the engine showcase games they make. They can give away their games and still keep going strong. And miss what? Cryteks games were always just made to show what their new engines could do, very bland story, very generic FPS gameplay and some features copied from older games (like the nanosuit).

Whether you like their games

Whether you like their games or not is irrelevant. It's thanks to developers that pushes the limits of what PC hardware can do that moves the industry forward, purely from a technical point of view of course. What I meant by RIP is that the Crytek as we know them will no longer exist. Just like what happened to Blizzard when they changed their business model.

Free to play... yeah sure.

Free to play... yeah sure... they mean freemium! Now i starting to hate this fremium thing... eventually u espend more money in freemiums than in a traditional boxed game... look at bf3 case i paid 59 buck for the game now the goes freemium stuff like new maps.
