Mortal Shell II is dropping the stamina bar entirely, replacing the original’s compact levels with a connected, freely explorable open world. The Soulslike sequel launches August 20 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with an open beta already covering its opening hours.

What Actually Made the Original Work

The first Mortal Shell centered on a nameless Foundling who could possess the bodies of fallen warriors. Each granted different stats and playstyles, giving the game its own identity within a crowded genre.

Mortal Shell II keeps that core idea but hands it to a new protagonist. Players now control the Harbinger, tasked with retrieving stolen eggs known as the Ova of the Undermether. Playstack’s official game page confirms the story stands alone and doesn’t require familiarity with the first game.

The Biggest Change: No More Stamina Bar

Combat sees the most significant overhaul. Removing the stamina bar means attacks and dodges are no longer gated by constant resource management.

Instead, the game shifts focus toward switching between attack, defense, poise damage, and new execution maneuvers. It still demands precise timing and reading enemy attacks.

  • Weapon depth: An expanded weapon system with more upgrade paths, plus secondary weapons integrated more directly into combat
  • Eight playable Shells: Each granting distinct abilities and combat approaches, up from the original’s five
  • Accessibility option: The Sigil of the Slaughterer restores health and resolve on successful executions, though using it disables certain achievements
  • Maßstab: Over 60 dungeons scattered throughout a compact but interconnected world

What the Open Beta Reveals

The beta covers roughly the first three hours, running from the prologue through the first open-world area. Players can access one playable Shell, Tiel the Acolyte, and work toward defeating an early boss, Magdalena.

Beta progress won’t carry over to the full release. RPGamer’s earlier gameplay coverage confirmed the open world includes various landmarks and regions alongside its more than sixty dungeons.

Length, Editions, and Release Details

Cold Symmetry estimates roughly 30 hours for the main story, with completionists looking at 60-plus hours. The Standard Edition costs $49.99, while the $59.99 Devout Edition adds an obsidian cosmetic skin set and up to 72 hours of early access.

A physical Revered Collector’s Edition, exclusive to PS5, adds a printed art book, steelbook case, and art prints. Notably, Mortal Shell II isn’t launching on Xbox Game Pass, unlike the original.

Fazit

Cutting the stamina bar is a genuine risk for a series built on deliberate, punishing combat. It opens room for the faster execution-focused system Cold Symmetry wants instead.

Combined with a much larger world and eight distinct Shells, Mortal Shell II looks like a real evolution rather than a bigger retread. The open beta gives a low-risk way to find out before August 20.
