PSP Must Sacrifice CPU Cycles For Remote Play
When it was released, PSP CPU frequency was artificially capped at 222MHz but Firmware version 3.5 which was released in June allowed developers to utilize PSP's full 333MHz. Today, Sony announced a new limitation.
According to Sony, network play is permitted only when running at 222MHz, so developers will have to choose either performance or multiplayer.
PSP is capable of running at 333MHz with Wi-Fi enabled and Sony has not explained the motivation behind such limitation; but one can easily imagine it has to do with battery life. Most probably, Sony felt that enabling the higher clock speed and wireless transmitter would result in inacceptable playtimes on a single battery charge.
