Aztecs: The Last Sun is a survival city-builder that asks a brutal question: “How many lives is your city worth?” Released into Early Access on 28 août 2025 (with a wider Steam release in September), it transports players to the chinampas of Tenochtitlan. Developed by Polish studio Play2Chill and published by Toplitz Productions (and later 663 Games), it distinguishes itself from the crowded genre by blending historical city-building with a mythological “tower defense” twist involving blood rituals and angry gods.
Mud, Maize, and Moonlight: Core Gameplay

The Duality of Gameplay: The game runs on a strict day/night cycle. During the day, it is a traditional city-builder. You dredge mud from the lake to build artificial islands, farm maize, and construct temples. At night, it becomes a survival horror game. A curse from the Moon Goddess manifests as darkness, and your only protection is the “Blood Zone”—a barrier powered by ritual sacrifice.
Sacrifice as a Resource: Human sacrifice isn’t just a flavor element; it is your electricity. You must capture prisoners or sacrifice your own citizens to generate “Blood,” which keeps the protective barriers active. If the blood runs dry, the shadows encroach, destroying buildings and killing citizens.
Chinampa Construction: The building mechanic is historically grounded. You cannot just place buildings anywhere; you must first terraform Lake Texcoco by building chinampas (floating gardens). This adds a unique logistical puzzle of managing water, land, and canals for transport.
Divine Favor: The game features a calendar system where different gods rule different days. Appealing to the patron god of the day can grant buffs, while ignoring them brings disasters like drought or plague.
Moral Choices: Narrative events force you to make tough calls. Do you execute a skilled artisan to keep the gods happy, or risk their wrath to keep your production efficiency high?
