Clive Barker has given Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival his full blessing, calling the result a lesson for the whole franchise. In a new interview, the Hellraiser creator also said he has many unmade ideas for the series. His praise lands as critics stay split on the game, while Steam players have rated it far more warmly.

What Barker Said About Revival

Barker spoke with Dread Central in an exclusive interview. There, he called the game “a wake-up call to anyone who’s been involved in the making of a franchise.” He added that he plans to stay involved and has been collecting darker story ideas in note form.

Barker also admitted he once feared the game would end up heavily censored. Instead, the game’s boldness amazed him, and he used a blunt, profane line to say how proud he is. TheGamer noted in its report that Barker worked closely with the team on the game’s look and feel.

How Involved Barker Was

Saber told Dread Central earlier in 2026 that Barker reviewed gameplay and narrative scripts periodically during development. The team also drew mainly on his novella The Hellbound Heart and the first two films. As a result, Revival works as a legacy sequel that sets aside the later follow-ups.

Doug Bradley returns as the voice of Pinhead, a role he first played in the 1987 original. Barker described the actor and the character as inseparable, and the two worked together in theater for years before Hellraiser. Notably, this marks Pinhead’s return to games following his removal from Dead by Daylight in April 2025.

Barker’s Criticism of the Old Sequels

The interview also turned pointed. Barker regained his U.S. copyright interests in The Hellbound Heart and his original screenplay, effective December 2021. He alleged that Bob Weinstein once admitted owing him money but would only pay in exchange for another script.

Furthermore, Barker said several Dimension-era sequels existed mainly to hold onto the rights, with budgets shrinking over time. He stressed that the writers and directors were not to blame, pointing instead to the studio system. The interview does not include a response from Weinstein, so these remain Barker’s claims.

Critics and Players Disagree

Barker’s enthusiasm is not universal. On OpenCritic, the game sits in the low-to-mid 70s, and roughly two-thirds of critics recommend it. Metacritic scores range from 69 on PS5 to 74 on PC and Xbox.

Individual verdicts vary widely, according to review roundups:

  • The praise: GameSpot gave it 8/10, and Dread Central awarded 4 out of 5. Both singled out its faithfulness to Barker’s work and its willingness to push the gore.
  • The pushback: TheGamer scored it 2.5/5, while IGN gave it 6/10. Critics cited bugs, repetitive combat, unfair checkpoints, and tedious forced stealth.
  • The players: Steam users have been far kinder, with the rating sitting above 90 percent positive. They mostly praise the atmosphere, sound design, and faithful tone.

Price likely helps too. Saber’s official release announcement set the Standard Edition at $39.99, well below full-price horror releases. That lower entry point makes the technical rough edges easier for fans to forgive.

Résultat final

Barker’s approval is the strongest endorsement Revival could get. Still, a creator’s pride does not fix bugs or checkpoints, so the critical split deserves weight.

If Saber patches the rough spots, though, Revival could become the template Barker wants the films to follow. For now, Saber has not announced a sequel.
