Halo Reboot Rumor: What’s Reported, What’s Confirmed, and What It Means for Fans.

Franchise : Halo | Développeur : Activision (new purpose-built team) | Plateformes : TBA | Date de sortie : TBA | Story Direction: Unconfirmed

Activision is reportedly considering a full Halo reboot that would tell Master Chief’s origin story. The claim comes from insider Rebs Gaming, whose source stresses that nothing is final. So far, Microsoft has only confirmed that Activision will build the next Halo with a new team.

What the Report Claims

Rebs Gaming says Activision first pitched two separate projects, as GamingBolt reported. One was a free-to-play multiplayer game, while the other was a campaign-only soft reboot. That campaign would have skipped the events of Halo Infinite entirely.

Now, the same source claims those plans are gone, as TheGamer details. Instead, Activision is reportedly weighing one full Halo game, possibly a hard reboot built around Master Chief’s origins. Still, the source cautions that the project is early and its direction could change.

Rebs also claims Activision built Halo prototypes before Microsoft announced the handover. According to Tech4Gamers, those tests point toward the Infinity Ward engine behind Call of Duty. If true, that would mean dropping the Unreal Engine 5 work Halo Studios spent years on.

What Microsoft Has Confirmed

The verified part of this story is much smaller. On September 22, Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty published a memo on Xbox Wire titled Continuing Our Reset. In it, he confirmed that Activision will develop the next Halo with a team separate from Call of Duty.

The same memo cut 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management. Afterwards, only a small Halo Studios team remains to support the games already on sale. Those include Halo Infinite and Halo: Campaign Evolved, which launched on July 28.

The handover is part of a much wider Xbox reset. In July, Xbox cut 1,600 roles and outlined plans to cut 1,600 more within the year. Booty’s memo also moved Rare and World’s Edge under Activision.

Activision president Rob Kostich then set a high bar in a statement to Game File. His goal, he said, is the “greatest Halo game ever” while staying true to what fans loved. Meanwhile, Microsoft has not announced a title, platforms, or a release window.

How Halo Got Here

Halo Studios began as 343 Industries in 2007, when Bungie split from Microsoft and left the series behind. In October 2024, the studio took its current name and moved development to Unreal Engine 5.

That transition proved costly. Insider reports say Halo Studios cancelled Project Ekur, a multiplayer game, to finish Halo: Campaign Evolved. Later, The Verge’s Tom Warren reported that Microsoft scrapped the studio’s next Halo because it was still years from release.

Campaign Evolved itself drew a mixed response, with critic scores in the low 80s on Metacritic. That ranks among the lowest for a mainline Halo, and Steam reviews landed at Mixed. It was the first Halo campaign on PS5, yet reviews most often criticized its missing multiplayer.

Why an Origin Story Makes Sense, and Why It Worries Fans

Master Chief’s childhood and Spartan training appear only briefly in the games. By contrast, Eric Nylund’s novel Halo: The Fall of Reach covers that period in depth, so source material exists. Notably, leaker TechnicalHalo has also claimed the next game would be a reboot.

However, a reboot raises real concerns. In the lore, the Spartan-II program abducted children, and TheGamer argued a reboot should not soften that history. Additionally, a hard reset would sideline more than two decades of established story.

Halo has also tried a fresh take on Master Chief before. Paramount+’s live-action series ran on its own Silver Timeline and often showed Chief without his helmet. That choice drew heavy fan criticism, and Paramount+ cancelled the show in July 2024 after two seasons.

Résultat final

An origin story is a reasonable way for a new team to own Halo without inheriting a tangled timeline. Yet reboots trade long-time goodwill for a clean slate.

The TV series also showed how quickly fans reject a Master Chief who feels off. With Halo turning 25 next month, treat this report as one possible direction, not a plan.

The reboot, origin story, and engine details in this article are based entirely on unconfirmed reports. Neither Microsoft nor Activision has confirmed the story direction or technology of the next Halo game. MegaGames will update this article as new information becomes available.
