Is Starfield Actually Dead? Bethesda Just Answered That Directly

Spiel: Starfield  |  Entwickler/Herausgeber: Bethesda Game Studios  |  Original Release: September 6, 2023  |  Announcement Date: July 17, 2026

Bethesda has confirmed Starfield remains “an important part of our future,” addressing long-standing fan concern that the space RPG had quietly been deprioritized. The reassurance came inside a broader studio roadmap update that also confirmed Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters, Fallout 5 entering pre-production, and Obsidian’s return to the Fallout franchise, an update triggered in part by Xbox’s ongoing restructuring.

What Bethesda Actually Said About Starfield

In its statement, Bethesda cited concrete engagement numbers to back up its commitment: “With over 17 million players logging almost a billion hours to date, Starfield remains an important part of our future.” The studio confirmed it will keep “expanding the Settled Systems with new stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates” as the game enters its third year, while also “preparing for the launch of new Starborn content next year.”

The update is notably light on specifics. Bethesda hasn’t detailed what form the promised Starborn content will take, and there’s no indication it will match the scale of Shattered Space, Starfield’s first paid expansion. Even so, the confirmation matters given the broader context: Xbox has openly pushed Bethesda to ship its biggest franchises, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, faster, which had fueled speculation that smaller-audience titles like Starfield could lose internal support entirely.

Where Starfield Sits in Bethesda’s Priorities

The Elder Scrolls 6 remains Bethesda’s stated primary focus, with Todd Howard confirming the majority of the studio’s team is working on it. Fallout 5 has now entered pre-production alongside it, built on the newly confirmed Creation Engine 3, though Howard was clear that Fallout 5 “remains our long-range destination” rather than an imminent release.

  • Starfield: Entering its third year of post-launch support, with new Starborn content confirmed for 2027
  • The Elder Scrolls 6: Bethesda’s primary development focus, with Howard saying the studio is “where they want to be” on its timeline
  • Elder Scrolls Online: Continuing with new seasonal content, with ZeniMax Online Studios integrating more closely with Bethesda Game Studios
  • Fallout 5: Now in pre-production on Creation Engine 3, positioned as Bethesda’s next major release after The Elder Scrolls 6

Fazit

Starfield isn’t getting a Shattered Space-sized follow-up anytime soon, and Bethesda’s language leaves plenty of room to scale support up or down depending on how the game performs going forward. That said, a direct, numbers-backed reaffirmation from the studio is a meaningfully stronger signal than silence would have been, especially with Xbox pushing Bethesda hard toward its two biggest franchises. Starfield players shouldn’t expect a big expansion soon, but the game isn’t being quietly abandoned either.
