Halo: Campaign Evolved launched to a Mixed rating on Steam. Login failures and an always-online requirement for a single-player game drove much of that reaction. Roughly 32 percent of the game’s 1,666 early Steam reviews gave it a thumbs down, with most complaints centered on server access rather than the core game itself.

What Actually Went Wrong

Premium Edition buyers got five days of early access ahead of the July 28 launch. That early window quickly ran into trouble. Players reported login failures, server queues, and an inability to reach the main menu, despite the game having no traditional multiplayer component.

Halo Studios later said it fixed the login issues within hours. Even so, the underlying problem remains unchanged. The game still requires a constant internet connection, and there’s no offline mode. Another server demand spike could bring the same failures back.

Beyond the Login Problems

Server access wasn’t the only issue players flagged. Several reviewers reported frequent crashes during firefights and stuttering performance. Others noted that cutscenes only run at 30fps. A separate bug also launched the game straight into its digital artbook instead of the campaign.

  • Missing split-screen co-op: Console versions kept local split-screen, but PC players only get four-player online co-op
  • Localization concerns: Some non-English reviewers flagged AI-generated voice work replacing the original cast in certain languages
  • Multiplayer bugs: Players noted that only the host can see mid-mission cutscenes during online co-op sessions

The Reviews Aren’t All Negative

Despite the technical rockiness, plenty of players who avoided the worst bugs came away satisfied. Several reviewers praised the game’s new three-mission prequel arc. They also highlighted an expanded set of gameplay-altering skulls as a genuine improvement.

PC Gamer’s own review found similarly positive things to say about the core campaign. Critics broadly praised a faithful, well-executed remake on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 Pro. On base PS5 and PC, reception was more mixed. The PC version’s Metacritic score landed at 77, noticeably behind console reviews.

Conclusión

Halo: Campaign Evolved isn’t a broken game underneath its launch problems. Plenty of players are enjoying it once they get past the front door. However, an always-online requirement for a purely single-player campaign is a genuinely strange design choice. It’s driving most of the negative reviews on Steam. PC buyers should wait for a few stability patches before jumping in.
