Escape the Backrooms is developed by Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive, and published by Secret Mode. It entered Steam Early Access on August 11, 2022, and reached its full 1.0 release on October 23, 2025, for Windows, before arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. Based on the viral Backrooms creepypasta, the game sends up to four players wandering an endless, unsettling maze of liminal spaces in search of a way out.

Escape the Backrooms builds its horror on atmosphere first, leaning into realistic graphics, minimal interface clutter, and a dreary, unsettling ambience rather than constant jump scares. Players start in the familiar yellow halls of Level 0 before pushing through more than 30 unique levels, each with its own escape route, environmental puzzles, and hazards. Since teammates can accidentally no-clip into separate areas of the same map, staying together becomes a real challenge rather than a given.

Every level introduces hostile entities with their own distinct mechanics, so surviving means learning behavior patterns rather than relying on a single strategy across the whole game. Proximity voice chat lets teammates communicate naturally, though the same entities that hunt players can also hear them, adding real tension to every conversation. Since the full team must reach each level’s exit alive to progress, no wanderer gets left behind, for better or worse.
