A New God of War Could Be Announced Any Day Now: Everything We Know

Game: Untitled God of War title  |  Développeur : Santa Monica Studio  |  Directed by: Cory Barlog  |  Target Release: First half of 2027

Multiple reliable insiders are pointing to an imminent reveal of the next God of War title. According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, Sony planned to announce the game in April. A PlayStation State of Play has been rumored for as early as April 16. However, neither Sony nor Santa Monica Studio has officially confirmed anything yet.

This Is Not Sons of Sparta or the Trilogy Remake

Sony currently has three God of War projects in motion. Knowing which one the insiders are discussing matters before diving into the details.

  • God of War: Sons of Sparta: A 2D action platformer developed with Mega Cat Studios. Sony shadowdropped it at the February 2026 State of Play, and players can download it on PS5 right now.
  • God of War Greek Trilogy Remake: Sony confirmed this at the same February 2026 State of Play. Santa Monica Studio is currently in early development on it.
  • This new untitled title: A separate mainline entry directed by Cory Barlog. This is the project insiders are referring to, and Sony has not announced it officially yet.

What the Insiders Are Saying

Tom Henderson (Insider Gaming)

On the April 11 episode of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast (timestamp 25:29), Henderson and the hosts discussed whether the rumored State of Play would include a new God of War announcement. Henderson noted that rumblings had pointed to a reveal in April, though he acknowledged some uncertainty about the exact timing.

NateTheHate

A full month earlier, NateTheHate had already outlined the core details in a post on X. According to his report, Faye will lead the game and combat will differ significantly from the Norse entries. Furthermore, he stated the current release target sits in the first half of 2027, barring any delays.

Shpeshal Nick

Shpeshal Nick added important context about the combat direction. He indicated that the game will take inspiration from Devil May Cry rather than from the action RPG style of God of War 2018 and Ragnarok. Consequently, players should expect faster, more combo-driven gameplay than the Norse saga delivered.

What We Know About the Game

You Play as Faye

Faye is Kratos’ late wife and the mother of Atreus. Notably, her death at the beginning of God of War 2018 sets the entire Norse saga in motion. Because the Leviathan Axe was originally forged for Faye, the iconic weapon will likely return in some form. This new title is therefore expected to function as a prequel to the events players already know.

Multiple Mythologies

On April 14, both GamingBible et Gadgets360 reported that the game will not be limited to a single mythology. Instead, Faye will journey through multiple mythological settings, with East Asian mythologies reportedly among them. Additionally, a former Santa Monica Studio employee’s LinkedIn profile mentioned working on the narrative of a “new franchise within the God of War universe” before taking it down. That detail strongly supports the idea that this game aims to expand the series well beyond its Norse and Greek roots.

Tyr May Also Appear

According to Gadgets360, the Norse god Tyr is expected to appear alongside Faye. Tyr played a central role in God of War Ragnarok, so his potential return suggests some continuity with the existing Norse storyline. At the same time, the game is reportedly branching into entirely new mythological territory.

Combat Closer to Devil May Cry

Both recent God of War titles used slower, more deliberate action RPG combat. However, this new game is reportedly moving in a very different direction. Faster, combo-heavy gameplay in the style of Devil May Cry is the reported target. Since Faye is a fundamentally different character from Kratos, a shift in combat style also makes strong narrative sense.

Directed by Cory Barlog

Cory Barlog directed the 2018 God of War reboot, which critics and players widely regard as one of the best games of its generation. He did not direct Ragnarok, as Eric Williams took that role instead. Therefore, this new project marks Barlog’s return to the director’s chair for the first time since 2018.

The State of Play Question

The rumored PlayStation State of Play is currently the most likely venue for a reveal this month. April 16 has been circulating as a possible date. NateTheHate, who first reported the event, described it as sounding “more third-party focused.” Nevertheless, Henderson’s comments suggest Sony may still use it to announce a first-party title.

If the State of Play turns out to be strictly third-party, then the next realistic window would be Summer Game Fest in June. Sony traditionally reserves major first-party announcements for that showcase as well.

Bottom Line

Three separate reliable insiders have independently described the same game, the same protagonist, and a very similar timeline. Moreover, the April window is backed by what Henderson specifically discussed on his podcast. Whether the announcement arrives this week, later in April, or slips to June, the next God of War is clearly real and far along enough in development to reveal publicly. When Sony does pull the curtain back, it will be one of the biggest gaming announcements of 2026.
