Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2

Unknown Worlds Entertainment developed and self-published Subnautica 2 under parent company KRAFTON, Inc. It entered Steam Early Access on May 14, 2026 on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox Series X/S including Xbox Game Pass. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5. Subnautica 2 is the direct sequel to the 2018 original and the third game in the series after 2021’s Subnautica: Below Zero. Unknown Worlds expects the Early Access period to run two to three years. All future updates toward version 1.0 are included in the $29.99 Early Access price, which will increase at full release.

About the Game

Subnautica 2 takes place on Zazura, an entirely new alien ocean world. You play as one of the passengers aboard the CICADA, an Alterra colony ship carrying 40,000 people. That is 250 times the size of the Aurora from the original game. The CICADA crash is the worst accident in Alterra’s history. Your task: survive, uncover what happened, and avoid the Leviathans. Design Lead Anthony Gallegos confirmed the deliberate choice of a new planet. Returning to 4546B would make players feel safe. On Zazura, every unfamiliar sound is an unknown threat, and that uncertainty is the heart of Subnautica 2.

New World: Zazura’s Ocean

Unknown Worlds built Zazura’s ecosystem from scratch. Dynamic ocean currents can sweep you from a safe 200-metre reef down to 500 metres without warning. Each depth level brings a genuine escalation of hostility, not just a palette change. New creatures include giant crabs, massive squids, and new Leviathan species. The Reaper Leviathan does not return. That may be worse, because you have no prior experience with what replaces it. Unreal Engine 5’s volumetric lighting gives every biome a sense of scale that makes the environment feel actively hostile.

Sculptural Base Building

Subnautica 2 replaces the original’s rigid grid-module base system with a sculptural, freeform approach. You control window shapes, room sizes, corridor connections, and interior lighting without snapping to prefab templates. Bases integrate organically into the sea floor rather than looking assembled from a kit. In co-op, building becomes a team effort. One player gathers resources, one constructs, one explores nearby caves, and one watches for Leviathans. Construction becomes a meaningful shared activity rather than a solo logistical task.

Wesentliche Merkmale

Multiplayer and Exploration

  • Four-Player Co-op with Full Cross-Platform Play: Co-op supports up to four players across PC and Xbox via cross-play from Early Access day one. Solo play remains fully supported for players who prefer the original’s isolated atmosphere. Unknown Worlds built the co-op system into the game’s foundation from the start. World design and systems account for group play throughout. Proximity-based inventory sharing lets players pull resources from a nearby allied locker while crafting. No complicated trading menus are needed. Teamwork carries practical mechanical value rather than being purely social.
  • Dynamic Ocean Currents and Living Ocean Physics: The ocean in Subnautica 2 behaves as a physical system rather than a visual backdrop. Currents move independently and interact with creatures, debris, and your position in real time. A downward current near Leviathan territory is a genuinely dangerous combination. It demands active response, not passive observation. The water reacts to light with volumetric accuracy across every biome. Knowing how currents behave in each zone becomes a survival skill as important as managing oxygen.

Crafting and Story

  • Full Crafting, Tools, and Survival Progression from Day One: Crafting, resource gathering, and the core progression loop are all available at Early Access launch. The Prawn Suit underwater mecha is confirmed for Early Access. The full tools and equipment slate spans 14 to 20+ items across the EA period. This covers vehicles, submersibles, adaptation systems, and biomods. Unknown Worlds plans Mining and Automation and a Farming System for post-launch updates toward version 1.0. Players who join at Early Access launch get a complete core experience while also participating in the game’s ongoing growth.
  • 10-Chapter Story Built Across the Full Early Access Period: The beginning of the narrative is playable at Early Access launch. It establishes Zazura, the CICADA crash, and the central mystery. The complete story arc spans 10 planned chapters. Unknown Worlds will deliver these through major updates across the two-to-three-year Early Access window. Players discover lore through exploration: audio logs from CICADA crew members, underwater ruins, and transmissions from unknown sources. Unknown Worlds has been transparent about what is and is not present at launch.
  • Survival Mode and Creative Mode: Both modes are confirmed in the internal milestone document as part of the Early Access content scope. Survival Mode preserves the full threat and resource pressure from the original Subnautica. Creative Mode removes survival constraints for players who want to focus on base building and exploration. Both modes are available in co-op. Groups can choose how they want to experience Zazura regardless of preferred playstyle.

Subnautica (Original, 2018) The direct predecessor set on Planet 4546B. It is a fully released 1.0 game with a complete story and the original grid-module base building system. It is solo-only with no multiplayer. Players widely regard it as one of the best open-world survival games ever made. It carries none of the Early Access caveats of Subnautica 2. Players who want the most polished and narratively complete Subnautica experience right now, with a finished story and no development gaps to wait through.
Subnautica: Below Zero (2021) The second entry in the series. It is set in a polar region of Planet 4546B with surface land exploration alongside underwater gameplay. Critics noted a smaller map, a shorter runtime, and a weaker narrative compared to the original. It is also solo-only with the same grid base building system. It introduces a voiced protagonist and above-water biomes that divide the fanbase. Players who have completed the original Subnautica and want more content from the same universe before committing to Subnautica 2’s Early Access period.
No Man's Sky It covers open-world alien planet exploration, base building, crafting, and multiplayer co-op across a procedurally generated galaxy. It uses a module-based construction system rather than Subnautica 2’s sculptural approach. It is a fully released game with years of major post-launch updates already delivered. No Man’s Sky offers far more total content than Subnautica 2 at any point during its Early Access period. Players who want the broadest alien exploration survival game available, with full multiplayer and a complete live-service update history already in place.
