Can a 2026 Shooter Really Skip the Battle Pass? E-Day Is Betting Yes.

The Coalition has confirmed Gears of War: E-Day will launch without a battle pass, tour of duty, or similar progression system. The studio said nearly every customization item can be earned simply by playing. Post-launch seasons will still arrive, but spending money won’t be required for most content.

What The Coalition Actually Promised

The studio framed this as a deliberate return to an older model of game ownership. According to The Coalition’s own multiplayer blog post, players unlock items by completing event challenges, earning achievements, and collecting medals. The system is inspired by Gears of War 3.

Most remaining content comes from Coins. This is a free currency earned through completing matches, leveling up, and earning medals during play.

There’s a weekly cap on how many Coins players can earn from matches. Even so, The Coalition says that cap leaves enough left over to buy a Legendary character skin. The studio also promised to adjust earn rates after launch if the pace feels wrong.

What Still Costs Money

The no-battle-pass promise isn’t absolute. E-Day’s Premium Edition includes exclusive items unavailable through regular play, including five planned Seasonal Customisation Packs. The game will also offer pay-only charity bundles, with proceeds going toward the Crisis Line charity.

The Coalition confirmed paid brand collaborations are coming too. One example is a Legendary weapon skin set made in partnership with Metallica.

  • Limited-time challenge rewards: Items tied to active challenges can only be earned through that specific challenge, not purchased with Coins as a shortcut
  • Missed rewards: After a cooldown period, expired limited-time items move to the Barracks, where players can buy them with Coins or Iron, an optional premium currency
  • Rotating shop: The in-game store only discounts items already available individually in the Barracks, so nothing is genuinely shop-exclusive
  • No double-charging: If a player already owns one or more items in a weekly bundle, the bundle’s price drops accordingly

A Broader Multiplayer Overhaul

This announcement arrived as part of a much larger reveal covering E-Day’s full multiplayer suite. PC Gamer’s hands-on coverage confirms the game splits multiplayer between Horde Siege and a more traditional 4v4 Versus mode. In Horde Siege, teams cross maps completing objectives before an extraction point.

E-Day will also launch with 60 unlockable characters across its two main factions. Nearly all of them are earnable through challenges or in-game currency, rather than direct purchase.

Fazit

Genuinely skipping a battle pass is a rare stance for a 2026 multiplayer shooter. The Coalition’s specific commitments, no bypassing challenges with premium currency, no double-charging on bundles, are more concrete than the usual marketing language around fairness.

The Premium Edition items and brand collaborations mean this isn’t a completely monetization-free game. Even so, promising that nearly everything else can be earned through play alone puts real pressure on The Coalition to deliver after launch.
