Activision’s First Halo Might Go Back to the Very Beginning

Activision is reportedly considering a full Halo reboot that would tell Master Chief’s origin story. The claim comes from insider Rebs Gaming, whose source stresses that nothing is final. So far, Microsoft has only confirmed that Activision will build the next Halo with a new team.

What the Report Claims

Rebs Gaming says Activision first pitched two separate projects, as GamingBolt reported. One was a free-to-play multiplayer game, while the other was a campaign-only soft reboot. That campaign would have skipped the events of Halo Infinite entirely.

Now, the same source claims those plans are gone, as TheGamer details. Instead, Activision is reportedly weighing one full Halo game, possibly a hard reboot built around Master Chief’s origins. Still, the source cautions that the project is early and its direction could change.

What Microsoft Has Confirmed

The verified part of this story is much smaller. On September 22, Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty published a memo on Xbox Wire titled Continuing Our Reset. In it, he confirmed that Activision will develop the next Halo with a team separate from Call of Duty.

The same memo cut 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management. Afterwards, only a small Halo Studios team remains to support the games already on sale. Those include Halo Infinite and Halo: Campaign Evolved, which launched on July 28.

Activision president Rob Kostich then set a high bar in a statement to Game File. His goal, he said, is the “greatest Halo game ever” while staying true to what fans loved. Meanwhile, Microsoft has not announced a title, platforms, or a release window.

Why an Origin Story Makes Sense, and Why It Worries Fans

Master Chief’s childhood and Spartan training appear only briefly in the games. By contrast, Eric Nylund’s novel Halo: The Fall of Reach covers that period in depth, so source material exists. Notably, leaker TechnicalHalo has also claimed the next game would be a reboot.

However, a reboot raises real concerns. In the lore, the Spartan-II program abducted children, and TheGamer argued a reboot should not soften that history. Additionally, a hard reset would sideline more than two decades of established story.

Conclusión

An origin story is a reasonable way for a new team to own Halo without inheriting a tangled timeline. Yet reboots trade long-time goodwill for a clean slate, and Halo fans have already absorbed plenty of upheaval this year. Until Activision shows something, treat this as one possible direction rather than a plan.

The reboot and origin story details in this article are based entirely on unconfirmed reports. Neither Microsoft nor Activision has confirmed the story direction of the next Halo game. MegaGames will update this article as new information becomes available.
