Rust developer: If you’re bored, stop playing

The developer of Rust, Garry Newman, has reached out to players of the game who continue to complain about it and asked them, rather politely, to just stop playinge. If they’ve played for hundreds of hour over the past three years and are not having a good time any more, he asks them to consider whether they may have just had their money’s worth with Rust and move on.

This statement comes after another recent overhaul of the game, which saw people happy for a time and then grow bored, again. This is something Newman sees happen every time the game updates and thinks that if his company, Facepunch Studios is ever going to get the game out of Early Access, it needs to choose a vision and stick to it, rather than continually catering to the people who are having problems with the game.

“If you’re interested in the game, if you play regularly and still get enjoyment when you play—we’re definitely interested to hear what you think. We especially love hearing your stories, watching your videos, seeing your screenshots and paintings—all things that this subreddit has been very low on,” Newman wrote on Reddit. “If we want to leave Early Access then breaking this loop has to be part of that plan. We have a pretty good idea on how to push forward with Rust, but none of it is going to make the game more appealing to people that have spent their last 1,000 hours hating it.”

This has elicited a mixed response from fans. Some claim that Newman is right on the money and that if people with hundreds of hours of play are still complaining, perhaps it really is time they just played something else instead.

Others however have argued that it’s clear from Newman’s tone that he doesn’t really know what direction he should take Rust and that it’s the potential for the game which keeps people coming back, not that they just love to hate on it.
