EA may have cancelled its next big Star Wars game

EA Games doesn't have a reputation for great Star Wars games. Or many great games at all, for that matter. Still, it has the Star Wars license so it gets to make the Star Wars games and although it was reportedly working on a monstrous entry in the franchise — which was initially being developed by Visceral games — the latest rumor suggests it's been cancelled.

This Star Wars game has been known by a lot of names, but most recently was codenamed Ragtag. It had been under development by a team at EA Vancouver, but Kotaku reports that a number of sources familiar with the matter have told it independently, that the game has been shelved.

Since the original publication of this report, more sources have come forward to discuss the game, suggesting that it would focus around playing a bounty hunter or scoundrel character who would explore an open world sandbox universe. There would be planets to visit, jobs to take from various familiar faces from the Star Wars universe, and faction wars between the various major players in the galaxy.

The planned release for the game was sometime late in 2020 which according to the sources, was just too late for EA executives who wanted something to release sooner. Therefore they've shelved the open world project and will be instead developing something much more small scale that can be released sooner. No one has reportedly been fired as part of this move, but the original Ragtag game seems dead in the water at this point.
