New Age of Empires II Expansion Released


The new year is almost upon us and there's plenty of gaming to be done before 2012 comes to a close. What better way to see in 2013 than by harkening back to the end of the last century. Age of Empires II: Age of Kings has a new unofficial expansion from a team of dedicated modders, called Forgotten Kings, bringing with it a host of new updates.

It's been heavily outlined in its dedicated reddit thread, but here are a few of the big changes and features the expansion brings:

  • Support for extra resolutions added, up-to 1920x1440.
  • Five new Civilizations with their own wonders and unique units. Italians, Incas, Indians, Slavs and Magyars.
  • Italians and Slavs get new graphics for their building sets.
  • A load of balance changes.
  • Two new campaigns, one based on Alaric I and one based on Francesco Sforza.
  • +50 population limit,bringing the count to 250.
  • Loads of bug fixes, including Windows 7 compatibility.
  • Many new units including Siege Towers, Imperial Camels, Slingers, Boyars, Elephant Archers and more.
  • Several new buildings such as Stables (for Americans), Fire Towers, Palisade Gates, Trade Workshops and Quimper Cathedrals.
  • A tonne of new technologies to research.

I think the biggest change there is the resolution support. Compared with the original maximum of 1280x1024, that's a huge jump that will see way more of the battlefield on the map at one time. Combine that with the extra maximum population and this expansion could see some pretty epic conflicts, all on one screen.

Unofficial, *yawn* waste of a click. But I do miss the days of having 4 player lan party against hardest AI opponets... My brother loved having 100 trebuchet, I would have like 150 archers, forget who else had what, fun times. But this wasn't the golden age of lan parties :S

This is why game companies try so very, very hard to shut down modders. They know they can do better, and for less. This is also why many people who used to make games for big companies left and started their own indie games. So they can actually FINISH them before release. No patches, or fixes, or entire scenarios of the game left out and later marketed as "DLC".

LAN Party

Think this may call for getting all my old Age of Empires mates round for a good old LAN party like the old days. Going to be strange not having to dig out loads of Ethernet cables and a hub then ******* about with IP settings. You people who grew up with wireless don't know how good you have it :P. Hell, I remember hooking my computer up to my mates using a serial cable so we would play Doom... god I'm old...


lol@the serial cable for doom, we spent hours trying to get that to work and still in the end could not do it. Those were the days, an options screen full of TCP/IP settings which no one knew what any of it meant.

It's not a true LAN party...

It's not a true LAN party until you sit around for 6 1/2 hours trying to get a game running on two different OS, and trying to bridge connections all to no success, then finally you end up playing either RoN or AoE, because they're the only things that work!
