Oculus Is Working To Make Rift Free Of Charge

If Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe had it his way, the Oculus Rift will eventually be available in stores for free.

During the Develop conference in Brighton, Iribe explained that while the virtual reality headset is definitely going to retail for $300 at launch, there is "potential that it could get much less expensive with a few different relationships and strategies."

"You can imagine if Microsoft and Sony can go out and subsidize consoles because there's enough money to be made on software and other areas, then there's the potential that this, in partnership, could get subsidized," he explained.

However, Iribe stressed that the company is still a long way from securing the required agreements to subsidize Rift. Nonetheless, the company is always looking for ways to cut down the headset’s price or offer it free of charge. "You want everybody to play it and the cheaper it is, the more people are going to go out and buy it. Today it's a $300 dev kit but we're thinking about how to get it out to as many people as possible."

The Oculus Rift dev kit is available to developers for $300 each. Retail availability date and price are yet to be announced.

I don't think it'll get

I don't think it'll get mainstream cause still most people don't know about it. It's the word to mouth that will make it more and more of a must buy for gamers. Once someone will try it at a friend's house he/she won't be able to play the old way again. I hope they'll release it this year....

This would also re-populate

This would also re-populate the Local-Multiplayer gaming, even if companies rather have everyone use their own console and copy of a game, it is unrealistic. Some people meet with friends to play for a few hours a few times a month, or even only a few times a year. Money hungry coorporations are failing to see how not all gamers have a lot of time, yet they would love to play games in a social setting. Not to mention without the local multiplayer features we know from the 90s to 2000s on consoles made it also popular in places like pubs, restaurants etc. With this headset you would not have to give up a larger screen and split it into 2 or more sections, not to mention being able to see your opponents screen has always been a bit of an annoyance, yet I would love to see this in the living room where you can play with multiple people at the same time. It would also allow people to play this anywhere and not just where they have a screen setup, a pair of headphones with it and you will experience the ultimate in gaming, I can guarantee it!! Making it cheap or even free is a smart move, it is software that brings in profit, not the hardware. You are better off giving customers a platform of high quality and components for a low price and then provide tons and tons of entertainment software. Hardware you buy once, software you buy for years after.

If you play a game with a

If you play a game with a rift and headphones you kill off any and every aspect of social gaming one could enjoy. Each player is completely isolated from the others even if they're sitting next to each other. The only link being within the game itself, which would make it pointless to gather up and play together, just do it over the internet. If you think about it for a second you'll realize nintendo addressed the problems you listed with social gaming without sacrificing social interaction by creating the wii u and its tablet like controllers. It's not working out well so they either failed spectacularly to advertise those features or most people just don't care about them...or both

spawn

Remember the spawn copies of starcraft and Diablo? I think this is what you are trying to get at. I spent countless hours with Diablo 1 and starcraft at LAN's With My Mates.

I want!

I so want one of these! This is what Sony or Microsoft should have come up with for the next gen consoles...but instead they just give us nothing new other than slightly updated hardware Mark my words...PC is where it's gonna be at when this drops
