The Old Republic Now Has A Gay Planet

Same gender relationships are now allowed in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but they are confined to a single planet in the galaxy.

SGR was introduced to the Star Wars MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) as part of Rise of the Hutt Cartel pack which added a single planet called “Makeb.” As of now, this planet is the only place in the galaxy where characters are allowed to select flirtatious dialogue options when talking to characters of the same gender.

Unsurprisingly, Makeb is now referred to as “the gay planet.”

Unfortunately for gay players, it is almost impossible to allow SGR across the whole SWTOR universe since it requires rewriting and recording hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of voice acted dialogues. As a reasonable compromise, it seems that BioWare has decided to make SGR available in content produced hence forth.

"First of all, I want to apologize that this is taking so long to get in the game," wrote BioWare executive producer Jeff Hickman on the game’s official site. "I realise that we promised SGR (same gender relationships) to you guys and that many of you believed that this would be with a companion character. Unfortunately, this will take a lot more work than we realised at the time and it (like some other pieces of content we talked about earlier in the year) has been delayed as we focused on the changes required to take the game Free-to-Play. "

"As we have said in the past, allowing same gender romance is something we are very supportive of," he affirmed.

Interestingly, this decision was criticized by conservatives and liberals alike. As for conservatives, they argued that “Star Wars is a family-based story with nothing to do with SGR” while liberals viewed the exclusion of gay characters to a single area that is accessible only by paying extra money as an "oddly regressive move."

Well now when i come to think

Well now when i come to think of it .. your right ! i think that they sould implement aids in this game so you learn of the consequences of homosexuality to ! So Bioware if you put homosexuality in a game then you are obligated to implement condoms and a tutorial in safe sex so to prevent people from getting aids !

WTF is all this about then? -

WTF is all this about then? ------- Why bother?--------- I find this just plain stupid. There is NO justifiable reason to even have an air of sexual orientation in the game and Star Wars is one universe where sex and sexuality play no part other than to determine gender. ---- Games like Mass Effect 2 & 3 could get away with it to a degree but it was hardly a game that needed it. --- I don't get why its necessary for games companies to enforce ANY sort of sexual orientation on players. Especially in games like SWTOR.-------- I mean, do any players who are gay really give a monkey's? ----- Have any gay players even thought about a game where they would like to see gay NPC's or worlds? -------- In fact. Have any players even thought that they'd would like to see more sex, regardless of orientation, in games?

OK I think I can answer this.

OK I think I can answer this. Do you play this MMO? Lot's of popularity comes from being able to be social or even flirty with people in bars and such getting lap dances maybe even via webcam, which can yield ingame coin. So for this it is pretty huge to have that option for people. On another note, I thought mass effect was crap and I hated every second I hear about those games.

So we should only have bland

So we should only have bland mr. straight white everymen in video games just because it clashes with your personal philosophy to have diversity? You don't think gendered and racial minorities are sick of never being represented in games? Or only being represented with negative stereotypes and associations? It's easy to dismiss something like as not mattering when it doesn't affect you, but it's this sort of thing that is preventing games rom taking on any kind of mature subject matter and being accepted as a diverse, respectable medium. If every movie was Avatar, nobody with any self respect would defend the film industry. But there are amazing, beautiful films that make it worthwhile. There's very few games that make defending the game industry worthwhile.

How does this affect the game?

Good or bad, change is inevitable. Ad hominem attacks aside, the real issue is/should be how the changes affect overall gameplay. Turning this into a political debate is pointless. I'm not gay nor am I for or against any changes. Ultimately I prefer to live and let live.

Ok I don't agree that Homosexual Dialog in a game will turn you gay this I Agree with. But the Comment about District 9 them OMG ******* Classic!

Good for Bioware

Good for Bioware, one of the few companies that tries to include everyone and attract as many players as possible and while doing that, it also helps to open some small minds stuck in 20th century. Too bad it's just one planet.

That the first poster referred to Bioware, not SWTOR, and then your snide remark mentions 4 different games... ALL made by Bioware. Next time, check your sources.

Gay ****

Gay **** like this is the one that is making the population increasingly gay. Now kids, who love Star Wars and video games, will have this as an influence. Nothing against gay people, but with so many '******' like influences like this in mainstream media it is no wonder so many new generation peeps enjoy taking it up in the a-hole.

Currently, there is no

Currently, there is no scientific consensus about the specific factors that cause an individual to become heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual—including possible biological, psychological, or social effects of the parents' sexual orientation. However, the available evidence indicates that the vast majority of lesbian and gay adults were raised by heterosexual parents and the vast majority of children raised by lesbian and gay parents eventually grow up to be heterosexual.

****** is a very offense word.

for ur commutative thought, that is like calling a black person the n word. i am not, nor have i ever been gay. was born straight, yet for some reason the thought of dumbasses like you roaming this earth really **** me the hell off. who the **** are you to tell a video game company that they arent allowed to make a downloadable pack for a game that includes gay relations?? are you here to speak for god? does your god condone you emotionally torturing the same people that he himself had given free will to do with what theyd like? if so then **** your god. scumbag. also, forgot the name of the guy, but qui-gon jin is gay. why do u like star wars if ur such a contradiction? seriously dude **** off.
