Ouya CEO: A New Ouya Will Be Released Every Year

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman revealed that they intend to release a new Ouya each year.

"Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy," she explained.

"There will be a new Ouya every year. There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3," she elaborated. "We'll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will."

All new Ouya iterations will be backward compatible.

WTF is this shit? Another console? A console open to modding with all the power of a smartphone? If I already have a smartphone (like everyone does) & I already have a PC (like everyone does) then WTF would I want this thing for?

There are a number of crucial

There are a number of crucial elements to mobile phones that allow their manufacturers to reasonably justify launch a new handset every 12 months, the contract as already mentioned being the strongest factor, there's also that the manufacturers make more than one handset a year to cater to the differing financial circumstances of their potential customers. Another important factor they need to remember, is the level of necessity a mobile phone has in modern-day western society, a large number of people have mobile phones, a large proportion of that figure might consider their phone to be an essential item, and again of those people, many may have contracts for their phones. It's difficult to imagine where exactly the Ouya will fit in our psyches and our homes amongst the likes of our already established consoles, desktop PCs, laptops, and of course, tablets...for the continuous annual refresh, pricing will be as essential as new yearly content that specifically addresses the improvements.

Positive aspect of having yearly updates is the firms can purchase the latest technology available at great prices. For example Sony and Microsoft are so expensive because they are forecasting for the future and purchasing technology for the future. This way we can get great prices with yearly updates on technology. The only downside are the games going to work on all the platforms. For example will games on Ouya 1 work on the 3rd and 4th version.

I think the Ouya will be dead

I think the Ouya will be dead in 3 years or less with this strategy. Or they will need to change it after year 2-3. I just can't see anyone scooping them up year after year. Mobile Strategy? Ouya doesn't have contracts and (hopfully) wont get dropped, or is made by Blackberry (oops). Why would micro upgrades entice people to purchase them year in and year out. So mobile strategy has contacts, Ouya doesn't, no reason to upgrade. Mobile phones also break more then any other technology due to abuse. Ouya, will probably sit somewhere and collect dust (#firstworldproblems). Whats the biggest reason for getting a new Ouya....more flash memory.....(1 example I know) wooooo...sounds like they're making them to order, and as parts become obsolete they are replacing them with the next most available part..... IMPO - Release every 2 years. So upgrades seem significant (F^#&'n 8 gigs). This will also give opportunity to make creative UI changes to enhance the user experience. I just see too many things wrong with 1 year intervals.

Great idea

With the advancments in hardware and the Android OS year on year, I think this is a great idea. It will also push the modding comunity, as all of us love to find new uses for old hardware we have lying around.
