Double Fine’s Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter Clears Stretch Goal After Backlash
Studio: Double Fine Productions | Campaign: Amnesia Fortnight 2026 – Indie Reboot (Kickstarter) | Base Goal: $400,000 | Stretch Goal Reached: $600,000 (Erika Ishii) | Label: Double Fine Action Labs
Double Fine’s Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter has passed its $600,000 stretch goal. As a result, voice actor Erika Ishii will voice a character in whichever game wins the studio’s backer-voted game jam. The milestone arrived after a turbulent week of backlash, harassment, and a stalled funding bar.
How Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Works
Amnesia Fortnight is a Double Fine tradition dating back to 2007. This year, backers vote on 26 pitches from the team, and four of them become prototypes during a two-week jam. Double Fine then polishes one winner into a small game under its new Double Fine Action Labs label.
Past jams produced Costume Quest, Stacking, and Iron Brigade. More recently, Kiln grew out of a 2017 Amnesia Fortnight prototype before launching this year. On top of that, 2 Player Productions is filming another documentary about the process.
Why This Kickstarter Matters
The campaign is Double Fine’s first major project since leaving Xbox. In July, Microsoft released the studio as part of a wider restructuring, letting it keep its IP and catalog. That same month, Double Fine laid off 23 employees to shrink to a sustainable size.
The campaign cleared its $400,000 base goal comfortably. Double Fine also added a headline $100 million stretch goal for Brütal Legend 2, which drew both excitement and skepticism.
The Erika Ishii Stretch Goal
Double Fine announced the Ishii goal on September 18, right after the campaign crossed $550,000. Ishii voices Atsu in Ghost of Yōtei and appears regularly on Dropout and Dimension 20.
The reaction turned ugly fast. A vocal group of critics resurfaced old social media posts from Ishii, and the replies escalated into harassment. Consequently, Double Fine locked replies on its announcement and stated that it does not support harassment in any form.
For several days afterward, the total barely moved. Posts on X claimed cancellations pushed the total down, but other outlets found it still slightly above its level at the announcement.
Double Fine later clarified in a reply on X that Ishii is donating their time. That raised questions about SAG-AFTRA union rules. As of September 23, none of the parties had publicly addressed the issue.
Goal Reached
The push finally came on September 28. Tim Schafer announced on Bluesky that backers had cleared the goal, pushing the total past $613,000. Ishii celebrated the news, even though nobody yet knows which game or character the role will involve.
That uncertainty comes with the format. Backers still have to choose the prototypes, and the winning game does not exist yet.
Fazit
Double Fine got the money, but the episode shows how easily a stretch goal can become a lightning rod. Tying a named performer to an unknown game invited scrutiny, and the unpaid-role question still deserves a clear answer.
Even so, the harassment aimed at Ishii was indefensible, and backers ultimately funded the goal anyway. The real test now is whether Amnesia Fortnight produces a game worth the attention.
