Security Firm Is Ensuring Watch Dogs Hacks Are Real

Watch Dogs’s senior producer, Dominic Guay, revealed that his team is working with a security firm to make sure that all in-game hacking is credible.

Watch Dogs is an open world action game featuring a protagonist who uses his smartphone to hack electronic systems to obtain confidential information and control machines and PCs. With hacking at the heart of the game, Ubisoft wanted to make sure everything the player does was as close as possible to real-life.

"We're working with Kaspersky Lab, a big security firm," said Dominic Guay. "They have really hardcore experts there on hacking. We send them some of our designs and we ask them feedback on it, and it's interesting to see what gets back."

"Sometimes they say, 'Yeah, that's possible, but change that word,' or, 'That's not the way it works,'" he added.

Guay believes that this approach protects Watch Dog from falling into the trap of “Hollywood hacking” and makes it more relatable to real-life.

Hope they do it right, I have a face palm moment in every movie or game where the protagonist has to "Hack the mainframe". Just out of curiosity, I wonder if the game developers (The actual programmers) are ever asked if hacking seems realistic, I know it's not their exact field but they should still have an idea. Better than not asking and just making crap up

You don't have to be heavily

You don't have to be heavily embedded to know how to run linux on a smart phone. Even from within Android it isn't too difficult to set up a decent console with proper libraries. I guess people still think phones are different from computers somehow. Get a phone with a slide out keyboard, dual-core or better, 1GB of RAM or more, grab an ALFA external wifi, install Kali Linux and kick some ***. The guys at Kaspersky are pretty cool and on top of most of the new techniques. I disagree with Eugene on most things but he has talented people. Kudos to Watch Dogs devs for doing some research. Hope the game turns out great.

Hacking through a phone? You

Hacking through a phone? You think it's something only the top echelon of hackers can do? It's far easier than you can imagine. You could even use a PSP Fat to do a lot as well. Honestly do us a favor and stop watching movies like swordfish, and give us a brake.
