Blizzard Will Not Release A Remaster For The Original WarCraft

The allure of caching in on past success by releasing remasters of classic games is hard to resist for most publishers; For better or worse, Blizzard is not one of those publishers.

Blizzard gets asked repeatedly by fans to release remasters for the original WarCraft and WarCraft 2, and the company has finally revealed why this won't happen. Simply put, the games are not that fun anymore.

Answering a fan during Blizzcon, Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce revealed that the studio have already created a remaster of the original Warcraft but will not release it as it doesn't live to today's standards.

"We had some dedicated folks that were passionate about the idea, dig up the Warcraft 1 assets and code," he said. "They got it working and they got it running in a window. And I played it. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was awesome for its time. I promise you, in today's world, by today's standards, it's just not that fun anymore."

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was released on MS-DOS in 1994. It was one of the games that defined Real Time Strategy games to date, but there is no doubt that the genre has evolved a lot since then. Personally, I believe that the game is unplayable by anyone who played modern RTS games. The game's low screen resolution makes the battle area too small and the number of units on screen too limited. It also misses a lot of the shortcuts we grew accustomed to and doesn't allow the player to control a group larger than 4 units.

After trying the recently released Final Fantasy VII remaster on mobile, I do understand that nostalgic old experiences don't really age well. What do you think?
