DVD Playback hacked Into Wii

Back in 2006 Nintendo announced their plans to release a new DVD-enabled Wii in 2007. Nintendo claimed that a hardware limitation is the reason behind Wii's failure to play DVD movies, but a group of hackers has proved them wrong.

An unnamed hacking group released a boot disc that enables Wii to play DVD movies. The new hack runs on modded Wii only. If you have a modded Wii, you can download the hack as a CD image and burn it then use it to boot your Wii when you want to play a DVD movie.

Owners of un-modded Wiis will have to wait until someone like Datel, who made the import game-playing Freeloader on GameCube, makes a boot disc that plays DVDs on normal un-modded Wii.

Watch out, there IS a hardware limitation, one of the modchip manufacturers (team ninja/wiinja chip) has this posted on their website:"***IMPORTANT***The use of DVD PLAYER Software for GC MODE can cause harm to your laser in the long run. Apparently the wii lens isn't made for continuous loading, and using that app (on DVD5 or DVD9) will; cause the lens to deteriorate quickly over time.greets"

great so they used a cheap laser lens to begin with damn well I hope they make an app so we can stream divx or mpeg4 movies from our pc's and onto ours wii's as my ps3 already does this but without hacks

the anonymous guy didn't say they used a cheap laser, he said it uses a laser not made for continuous reading.there is a big difference between the two and if you think about it the kind of "burst" reading that the Wii uses actually PROLONGS the life of your Wii:D
