These New PhysX Water Effects Look Great


PhysX was at the forefront of boxes flying all over the place a few years ago, then when Nvidia picked up the technology from Ageia, it further developed cloth and explosive particle effects. It was impressive stuff, but one thing that's been looking pretty naff for a long time is water. Sure it looks more acceptable in recent games, but it's still never looked quite right.

Until now.

The new video from PhysX developers shows the new Position Based Fluids system that works in a similar fashion go PhysX cloth and deformation handling, allowing it to create surface tension and give the water its own energy and momentum. This lets it flow around obstacles in a natural fashion and react to gravity in a realistic manner.

Perhaps the best looking part of it is the surf generated by colliding particles. This allows for the creation of natural looking waves when momentum is applied from one direction, or when the particles are dropped and smashed together. You can even watch the white water gradually dissipate after being forced under the surface.

The greatest aspect of this whole thing though, is that it's running on a single GTX 580, so it really won't be long before we see this sort of thing showing up in new PhysX enabled titles.

A game already done this...

Hydrophobia (2010), ebe and flow of water is nothing new, how it reacts with its enviroment is nothing new. but I do like how nvida (trys to) spin this as something new. Just more code ripping form other companies like normal.

Now simulate millions of

Now simulate millions of objects in a scene with physx applied to them and have them all independently reacting to every (hitch, change, distortion, force) and then we'll talk. Havok has done this since day one of its release, because its not dependent on the gpu to process or post process the physics.

i have to say its very impressive considering it only uses 1 580gtx . the 680 gtx is twice has powerful .so this can be used in games assuming the base system is 680 gtx :P oh well maybe two more gens of gpu then this is for real .. has for next gen consoles able to do this with good detail on everything else youd better forget that idea

Depends greatly on what you consider power (power hungry, power consumption, power out put etc) gtx 680 is a terrible idea if we're simply comparing physics lets keep the argument purely on physics not the video card market itself. Your argument seems to imply that all games make use of physx, yet physx is a choice the developers employ. Just because you design a product doesn't mean it would make use of all the technology companies like Nvidia or ATI have to offer, that applies to both Physx and Havok in general. The fact is they could be using software based physics and you just wouldn't know it.
