Valve Announces Steam Controller With Dual Trackpads

The third and final promised Valve announcement is out: the Steam Controller.

Believing that current gamepads are not good enough, Valve took it upon itself to redesign the peripheral and replace the conventional thumb sticks with dual trackpads. The controller is also designed specifically for PC, so it comes with an option to disguise itself as a keyboard + mouse.

"The Steam Controller is designed to work with all the games on Steam: past, present, and future. Even the older titles in the catalog and the ones which were not built with controller support," explained Valve. "We've fooled those older games into thinking they're being played with a keyboard and mouse."

At the center of the Steam Controller lies a clickable high resolution touch screen. And by clickable, we mean that the screen itself can be pressed down like a button. This allows a player to touch the screen, browse available actions, and only then commit to the one they want. In order to avoid forcing players to divide their attention between screens, when a player touches the controller screen, its display is overlayed on top of the game they’re playing.

According to Valve, Steam Controller's haptic feedback has been reengineered as well. "The Steam Controller is built around a new generation of super-precise haptic feedback, employing dual linear resonant actuators. These small, strong, weighted electro-magnets are attached to each of the dual trackpads. They are capable of delivering a wide range of force and vibration, allowing precise control over frequency, amplitude, and direction of movement."

Steam Controller works with any PC and is not bound to Steam Machines. The controller is currently in Beta and will be released early in 2014.

I like this controller. It's

I like this controller. It's supposed to be used in the living room where there is no space for mouse + kb, it has trackpads instead of analog sticks which are probably much more comfortable to use since you don't have to keep your thumbs raised and it has a small screen for game specific menus which could work well if devs have access to it. Let's not fear change people, that's what grandparents do. captcha: leaps and bounds

So there is no feedback to the fingers as you would have when depressing a button? Plus they are trackpads.....not impressed. Would have to have hands on experience before buying one of these controllers. Pretty sure this sucker wasn't designed by gamers. If I want to play a game with mouse and keyboard for FPS advantage that is what I use. If I want a controller that is what I use. I will try one if I know anyone that buys one. But I'll not waste my money on an idea like this. Makes me think of the Game Glove for the NES. Would be better off sticking my **** in a light socket. Then at least I might get some good pain killers and catch a good buzz.......hehe, see what i did there?

If you are a dinosaure and

If you are a dinosaure and you want to stick with your mouse and keyboard til the end of times, YOU CAN STILL DO IT SO SHUT UP! Meanwhile I'll be playing games that do not require lightning fast rectitude with this controller such as RTS, RPGs and so on. Some people have been asking since ages new ways of playing games on the pc, something new that gives more feedback along innovations and this is a huge step in this direction so I'll embrace this move by Valve. I'm also quite mad they didn't announce HL3 ****!!!!!!

Funny that you attempt to

Funny that you attempt to call people who like mouse + kb dinossaurs and then refer to yourself not playing games that require quick reflexes, that's the very attitude you see in older people whose reflexes are no longer up to par.

Not many like...

Not many people like using track pads on laptops. .. why would people want to use twice at once to control movement / aiming in games? That controller looks pretty blan and like a half *** attempt at an xbox controller but black.

PS3/PS4 user here, the dudes right they made a cheap looking Xbox controller with terrible control surfaces... And raised, weird *** palm grips. They should have just more closely stolen the Xbox design tbh.
