Bethesda Finally Answers the Fallout Remaster Rumors That Wouldn’t Go Away

Games: Fallout 3 Remaster, Fallout: New Vegas Remaster, Fallout 5  |  Developer/Publisher: Bethesda Game Studios  |  Announcement Date: July 17, 2026  |  Status: In development, no release dates announced

Bethesda director Todd Howard has officially confirmed remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. An internal Bethesda roadmap fueled speculation about these projects for months. The document surfaced during the FTC’s case over Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Howard also confirmed Fallout 5 has entered pre-production. Additionally, he confirmed a new, still-unannounced Fallout project with series veteran Obsidian Entertainment.

What Howard Actually Confirmed

“We know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences,” Howard said. Neither remaster has a release window yet, and Howard didn’t specify how far along either project currently is.

This confirmation follows months of fan speculation. The FTC’s antitrust case against Microsoft made these internal documents public, and they contained an early reference to a Fallout 3 remaster.

Meanwhile, Obsidian developed New Vegas back in 2010. Many fans still consider it one of the franchise’s strongest entries, thanks to its reactive world design and branching player choice.

Fallout 5 and the Return of Obsidian

Howard confirmed Fallout 5 is now in pre-production. Creation Engine 3 powers the project, the same shared platform that also drives The Elder Scrolls 6.

He described Fallout 5 as the studio’s long-range destination. The Elder Scrolls 6 still commands most of Bethesda’s staff and remains the studio’s main priority.

  • Obsidian’s new project: Howard confirmed Obsidian is developing a new Fallout game with Bethesda, though the studio hasn’t shared scope or setting details yet
  • Fallout 76: Bethesda plans a new expansion called Raven Rock, a direct prequel to the story of Fallout 3
  • Fallout Shelter: The mobile spinoff has surpassed 250 million players and will continue receiving new seasonal content
  • Fallout on screen: Amazon is also producing season 3 of its Fallout television series, alongside a separate, unscripted Fallout Shelter project with Kilter Films

Notably, Obsidian’s involvement comes after the studio reportedly lost close to a quarter of its staff to Xbox’s recent layoffs. Interestingly, Bethesda had previously stopped Obsidian from pursuing a different, self-pitched Fallout project. Xbox’s current mandate for closer studio collaboration later changed that.

Why This Announcement Came Now

Howard’s statement arrived as part of a broader roadmap update addressing Bethesda’s future. This follows Xbox’s sweeping restructuring, which cut roughly 3,200 jobs across the platform.

Howard told Windows Central the goal is bringing Bethesda’s teams closer together. As part of that effort, ZeniMax Online Studios will now partner more directly with Bethesda Game Studios. Together, they’ll focus on The Elder Scrolls franchise going forward.

Bottom Line

This is the clearest confirmation yet that Bethesda isn’t finished revisiting its classic Fallout era. Still, fans need patience.

Neither remaster has a date yet. Fallout 5 also sits behind The Elder Scrolls 6 in priority, and Obsidian’s new project remains almost entirely unspecified.

Bethesda has historically stayed quiet for years at a stretch. For this studio, simply confirming these projects exist, on the record, is itself the real news.
