Why Your GTX 1060 Will Not Survive Emergence Day
Game: Gears of War: E-Day | Developer: The Coalition | Publisher: Xbox Game Studios | Platforms: PC (Steam, Xbox on PC), Xbox Series X|S | Release Date: October 6, 2026 (Premium Edition early access October 1)
Gears of War: E-Day will not launch on PC graphics cards that lack hardware ray tracing. The Coalition confirmed the hard requirement in its final PC specs, which it shared as the game went gold. As a result, many players on older but still capable cards will need an upgrade before October 6.
No Ray Tracing, No Launch
The studio’s wording leaves no room for doubt. Its spec sheet states: “A hardware ray tracing capable graphics card is required.” That is because the game builds its reflections, shadows, and global illumination around ray tracing.
In practice, the requirement shuts out Nvidia’s GTX 10 and 16 series cards. On the AMD side, it rules out the RX 5000 series along with older Polaris and Vega GPUs. GameSpot notes this effectively locks out a whole hardware generation, including once-popular cards like the GTX 1060.
The Full PC Requirements
Beyond ray tracing, the demands stay fairly moderate at the low end. Every tier assumes upscaling through DLSS, FSR, TSR, or XeSS. Here is how the three presets break down:
- Minimum (1080p, 60 fps, Medium): GeForce RTX 2060 or RTX 5050, Radeon RX 6600 or RX 9060, Ryzen 5 2600X, Core i7-6850K, or Core i5-10400, 12 GB RAM, 6 GB VRAM.
- Recommended (1440p, 60+ fps, High): GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 5060, Radeon RX 6700 XT or RX 9060 XT, Ryzen 5 5600 or Core i5-11600K, 16 GB RAM, 8 GB VRAM.
- Ultra (4K, 60+ fps, Ultra): GeForce RTX 5070 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT, Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Core i7-14700K, 16 GB RAM, 12 GB VRAM.
All three tiers also call for 115 GB of free space on an SSD. On the feature side, the game supports DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, XeSS 3.0, HDR, ultrawide displays, and a benchmark mode.
Premium Edition owners can start playing on October 1, while Game Pass members get access on October 6. Pre-install opens on September 29 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam.
Part of a Growing Trend
Gears of War: E-Day is not the first major game to take this approach. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle also refused to run without ray tracing hardware. Similarly, DOOM: The Dark Ages made hardware ray tracing mandatory on PC.
The logic is easy to follow on a technical level. Building lighting entirely around ray tracing spares developers from maintaining a separate fallback system. Still, TheGamer argues the rule creates a real barrier, since so much of the game’s atmosphere depends on that lighting.
Bottom Line
The requirement is defensible, but it lands at an awkward time, with memory prices still high. Once you clear the ray tracing bar, though, the minimum specs are surprisingly forgiving. Anyone still on a GTX-era card should plan an upgrade before October 6, because no settings menu will rescue them.
