Kojima: Games Must Converge With Movies To Survive

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima believes that both games and movies are doomed unless they converge into a single art form that combine's movies' narrative focus with games' interactivity.

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat during a tour of Kojima Production's new studio in Tokyo, the famous game director explained that people are getting busier and are having less time for entertainment than ever. It is only natural - Kojima believes - that consumers would favor media that combine several experiences in one sitting.

"In life people are very busy doing lots of things. The time you have to choose what media or entertainment you experience is dwindling, so more and more people are looking at types of media that combine elements together."

"If we just make a game people are less likely to choose that as something to do. They would rather engage in something that combines different forms of entertainment together. That's where we need to focus our efforts, on this convergence."

Kojima's vision reminds us of Quantum Break, a game that segmented together third person action gameplay with live-action TV drama. While both sides of Quantum Break were well crafted, the genre mingling divided critics. Many critics praised the game for its polished execution, but gamers at large felt that the lengthy live action segments were only a distraction.
