Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2
Cold Iron Studios developed and Daybreak Game Company published Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, with 20th Century Games serving as the brand licensor. The game was officially announced on May 7, 2026 and is scheduled for release in Summer 2026 (Q3 2026) on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It is the direct sequel to the 2021 co-op third-person PvE shooter Aliens: Fireteam Elite, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Aliens film. Furthermore, the sequel expands the squad from three to four players, introduces a fully customizable Specialist class, and sends Colonial Marines to a new front on planet LV-558.
About the Game
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 drops up to four Colonial Marines into a fight for survival against overwhelming Xenomorph swarms, synths, and Pathogen threats. This is not a rescue mission. The Xenomorphs have taken the offensive and your fireteam is on the back foot from the first deployment. Furthermore, the game deepens the tactical layer of the original with smarter enemies, expanded class mechanics, and a brand new Specialist class that gives each player the freedom to build a truly unique Marine. As a result, squad composition matters more than ever, with every class combination opening up new approaches to each encounter.
Four-Player Co-op and Squad Mechanics
The expansion from three to four players is the single biggest structural change from the original game. The fourth slot gives squads more tactical flexibility and opens up class combinations that three-player groups could never achieve. Furthermore, the improved squad mechanics reward deliberate coordination rather than simply sticking together. Roles within the fireteam become more distinct as each class brings abilities that complement specific partners. Consequently, playing with a well-composed and communicating four-player squad feels fundamentally different from the original Fireteam Elite experience.
The Specialist Class and Customisation
The Specialist is AFE2’s flagship new addition, a fully customizable class that lets you mix and match major and minor abilities from every other class in the game. Rather than being locked into a fixed role, the Specialist can be tailored to fill gaps in any squad configuration. Furthermore, the broader weapon and gear customisation system has been expanded over the original, giving every class more options for loadout tuning. Therefore, both the Specialist and the standard classes offer significantly more build variety than the first game provided at launch.
Key Features
Combat and Enemies
- New Xenomorph Varieties with Smarter AI: AFE2 introduces a massive variety of new Xenomorphs that force squads to stay mobile and maintain constant situational awareness. Each new enemy type has distinct behaviours and attack patterns that cannot be countered the same way. Furthermore, the smarter AI means stalking from shadows, flanking movements, and coordinated swarm attacks are all part of the Xenomorph threat rather than simple linear charges. As a result, encounters escalate from tense standoffs to genuine chaos in a way that keeps even experienced players on edge throughout each mission.
- Colonial Marines vs Xenomorphs, Synths, and Pathogen Threats: The enemy roster in AFE2 is not limited to Xenomorphs alone. Synths and Pathogen-related threats add variety to the combat scenarios and demand different tactical responses from your squad. Furthermore, mixing enemy types within the same mission creates compound pressure points that no single class can handle alone. Consequently, class composition decisions made before deployment have direct consequences mid-mission when multiple enemy types converge simultaneously.
Modes and Progression
- Dedicated Horde Mode with Escalating Rewards: AFE2 launches with multiple dedicated Horde maps designed to push squads to their absolute limit. Waves escalate in difficulty and enemy variety as your fireteam survives deeper into each run. Furthermore, surviving longer earns increasingly valuable rewards that feed back into progression and loadout customisation. Therefore, Horde mode serves both as a pure test of squad skill and as an efficient path to unlocking higher-tier gear outside of the main campaign missions.
- Full Cross-Play Across All Platforms: AFE2 supports full cross-play between PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, meaning your four-player squad can include players on any platform without restriction. This removes the biggest friction point in co-op games, where friend groups split across platforms are forced to buy duplicates. Furthermore, cross-play ensures the matchmaking pool stays healthy across all regions and platforms simultaneously. As a result, finding a full four-player squad at any time of day is significantly easier than in platform-restricted multiplayer titles.
