Players juggle production chains, citizen happiness, and diplomatic relationships across two main modes: an open-ended continuous play session, and ten scenario missions that gradually escalate in difficulty. Since colonies grow through careful resource management, balancing expansion against upkeep remains central to succeeding at any difficulty level.

The Sunken Dragon expansion ships fully included, adding an 11-mission campaign along with new opponents and decorative ornaments. Additionally, this History Edition supports resolutions up to 4K, borderless windowed mode, and multi-monitor setups, none of which existed in the 2006 original. Multiplayer functionality also received a full update for modern matchmaking standards. As a result, players jumping in today get a smoother, more stable experience than the original release ever offered, while original save files remain fully compatible with the new version.
