Wanderburg

Wanderburg

Wanderburg comes from German developer Randwerk and publisher Sidekick Publishing. The game entered Steam Early Access on September 8, 2026, for PC. Players pilot a mobile fortress across a bizarre medieval world where every castle, village, and army moves on wheels or legs. The goal is simple on paper: devour everything smaller, then survive everything bigger.

About the Game

Wanderburg drops players into a minimalist roguelike loop built around one growing vehicle. Rolling forward consumes fleeing villages, wandering herds, and weaker rival fortresses, and each kill feeds new modules onto the player’s castle. As a result, a single starting tower can end a run as a rolling war machine bristling with cannons and wizard towers.

Combat blends real driving physics with active abilities, so timing and positioning matter as much as raw firepower. Between runs, players unlock new vehicles, weapons, and playstyles, which keeps each attempt feeling distinct. The anachronistic setting, inspired by Mortal Engines and Howl’s Moving Castle, mixes knights on bicycles with steam-powered siege engines for a tone that stays playful even during frantic late-game battles.

Key Features

  • Devour-to-Grow Combat: Villages, herds, and rival castles all feed the player’s fortress. Consequently, the castle physically expands with every confirmed kill instead of leveling up invisibly.
  • Modular Fortress Building: Flamethrowers, cannons, wizard towers, and explosive mines slot onto the castle in a Survivors-style progression system. Players can chase wildly different builds from run to run.
  • Real Driving Physics: Steam-powered siege engines and knights on motorbikes move with actual momentum and handling. This adds a layer of vehicle mastery on top of the usual roguelike positioning.
  • Procedurally Generated Biomes: Each run rolls through a different arrangement of the game’s diverse, bizarre medieval ecosystem. No two expeditions across the map play out identically.

Vampire Survivors Shares the same devour-and-grow bullet-hell structure, though it drops the vehicle entirely in favor of an on-foot character. Its runs are also shorter and less build-dependent on physics. Players who want the growth loop without steering a castle.
Death Road to Canada Also centers on a moving vehicle surviving a hostile world, but it leans into road-trip survival and dark comedy over siege combat. The pacing stays slower between encounters. Players drawn to vehicle-based survival with a comedic tone.
Kingdom Two Crowns Combines base building with side-scrolling defense, similar to Wanderburg’s fortress growth. However, it trades open-world driving for a fixed, side-scrolling kingdom. Players who prefer kingdom management over direct vehicle combat.
