Cyberpunk 2077 Has a Movie Deal, So What Happened to Its Last Live-Action Project?
Project: Untitled Cyberpunk 2077 live-action film | Studio: Paramount Pictures | Producers: Lorenzo di Bonaventura, CD PROJEKT RED | Director/Cast: Not announced | Release Date: TBA
Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with CD PROJEKT RED co-producing. Deadline broke the news on October 8, and Transformers veteran Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce. The deal brings a major Hollywood studio to a franchise that has sold over 40 million copies.
What Is Confirmed So Far
According to Deadline’s exclusive, the film will use the game’s universe as its setting. Di Bonaventura shares producing duties with CD PROJEKT RED, which owns the franchise rights.
Shortly after the report, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the partnership on X. As Gematsu reported, he praised Paramount as a partner that “shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise”. He also promised more details at a later point.
Beyond that, the list of unknowns is long. There is no director, writer, cast, plot, or release window yet. Likewise, nobody has said whether the film follows V or tells a new Night City story.
What Happened to the Anonymous Content Project?
This is not CD PROJEKT RED’s first live-action Cyberpunk deal. In October 2023, the studio announced a partnership with Anonymous Content, the company behind True Detective and Mr. Robot. At the time, the project was searching for a screenwriter to tell a brand-new story in Night City.
Since then, neither company has shared a public update. The Hollywood Reporter described that project as a series in 2023. So far, no report has said whether the Paramount film replaces it, absorbs it, or runs alongside it.
Cyberpunk Beyond the Game
The movie joins a franchise that has grown well past its rocky 2020 launch:
- Sales: Deadline puts Cyberpunk 2077 above 40 million copies sold. On top of that, the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million.
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: The 2022 Studio Trigger anime became a hit on Netflix. It also won Anime of the Year at the 2023 Anime Awards.
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2: A standalone, 10-episode follow-up with a new cast. It arrives on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
- The next game: CD PROJEKT RED is working on a sequel codenamed Project Orion. It has no release date, and it follows The Witcher 4 in the studio’s plans.
The setting itself predates the game. As GamesRadar points out, it began as Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop RPG. Pondsmith has said CD PROJEKT RED holds the rights to stories from 2077 onward, while he keeps the earlier eras.
The Producer and Paramount’s Game Slate
Di Bonaventura has produced the live-action Transformers films since 2007, along with the GI Joe movies. Therefore, his involvement hints at big-scale action, as Softonic noted. However, it says little about tone, which matters for a setting built on dark satire and body horror.
Paramount is also busy with other game adaptations. According to GameMeca, the studio has a Street Fighter film opening in US theaters in October 2026. Similarly, Deadline reports a Call of Duty movie with a 2028 release date.
Bottom Line
A studio deal with no director or script is the earliest stage of a film. The quiet Anonymous Content project shows how long that stage can last.
Still, CD PROJEKT RED’s hands-on role made Edgerunners work, so keeping the studio as co-producer is the right call. The real test is whether Paramount tells a fresh Night City story instead of compressing a sprawling RPG.
