Yesterday we reported how Sonic Mania, the new game from Sega and Headcannon games that hearkens back to a simpler time in platforming's past, required an internet connection to even play the single player portion of the game on PC. We were a little sceptical of claims that that was a mistake and shouldn't have been present in the game, but they may well have been true, as less than 24 hours later and the game has dropped its always-on requirement.
There was quite a big outcry when this news broke yesterday and a number of the more recent Steam reviews of Sonic Mania have reflected that concern. They also decry the use of the Denuvo DRM, claiming that it can slow a game down and make it hard to play when the game has fallen out of favor with fans.
Now they can't complain about the first issue at least, as Sega and Headcannon have removed the always-on requirement. You can now play Sonic Mania whether you're connected to the internet or not.
The Denuvo DRM still applies to the game, but there is now a notification on its Steam page, so if you're a new potential buyer, you do at least know what you're getting into.
