EA Won’t Remake Underground 2. A Solo Fan Just Did Anyway.

Game: Need for Speed: Underground 2 (2004)  |  Fan Project: Unreal Engine 5 remake by solo developer 2Unreal5Underground (LoopSkaify)  |  Access: Free playable demo via Discord  |  Original Publisher: Electronic Arts

A solo developer has rebuilt Need for Speed: Underground 2 in Unreal Engine 5. A free playable demo is available right now.

The project comes from a YouTube creator working under the name 2Unreal5Underground. Getting access requires only a Discord account, no purchase or sign-up fee involved.

What the Remake Actually Delivers

GameStar’s coverage notes the remake comes from a single person working largely alone on the 2004 racer. The visuals hold up well despite that scale, looking noticeably sharper than the 20-year-old original.

Vehicle sounds carry over directly from the original game, unchanged from 2004. For nostalgic fans, that’s likely to read as a feature rather than a limitation.

A Project That’s Grown Far Beyond a Simple Demo

DSOGaming has tracked the remake across multiple updates since its first playable build appeared. The developer, who also goes by LoopSkaify, has said more than three-quarters of the full game is already complete, aside from final graphical polish.

Recent builds have added drafting mechanics for extra nitrous, upgraded traffic AI, free-roaming rival racers, and reworked suspension physics. A dedicated launcher is also planned, letting players download and update the remake without relying solely on Discord.

One Thing the Remake Can’t Include

The original Underground 2 soundtrack leaned heavily on licensed music, and that’s the one piece missing here. Licensing costs for popular songs have grown steep enough that even major publishers balk at them now.

A member of the band Heaven 17 previously described declining a licensing offer tied to GTA 6. That gives some sense of how those negotiations play out at the top of the industry. A single unpaid developer has essentially no path to clearing an entire soundtrack of that scale.

The Real Risk: EA Could Shut This Down at Any Time

Fan remakes of licensed, still-owned franchises exist at their publisher’s mercy, and recent history offers a stark warning. In August 2024, Activision shut down a large fan-made Call of Duty: Modern Warfare project. That happened just one day before its planned release.

GamingBible, covering the demo’s original release, noted the project is better understood as a remaster than a ground-up remake, since it imports the original game’s assets into Unreal Engine 5 rather than rebuilding everything from scratch. That distinction doesn’t make it any less exposed to a takedown, since it still relies entirely on EA’s owned assets and code.

Bottom Line

This remake exists purely because EA itself has shown little interest in revisiting Underground 2. The publisher has previously suggested Need for Speed’s classic era holds limited commercial priority going forward.

That leaves fans dependent on unofficial projects for a proper modern take on the series’ most beloved entry. Try the demo now, since there’s no telling how long it will stay available.
