Is Aniimo Worth Your Time, or Just Another Gacha Grind Wearing a Pokémon Costume?

Is Aniimo Worth Your Time, or Just Another Gacha Grind Wearing a Pokémon Costume?

Game: Aniimo  |  Developer: Pawprint Studio (backed by FunPlus)  |  Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS, Android  |  Console/PC Release: September 16, 2026  |  Mobile Release: September 23, 2026

Aniimo, a free-to-play creature-collecting RPG from Hangzhou-based Pawprint Studio, launches on console and PC this week. The comparisons to Pokémon are immediate and obvious, and plenty of online criticism has already written it off as a straightforward clone.

That criticism misses the more relevant question, though. Three closed beta tests left players genuinely split, not over whether Aniimo copies Pokémon, but over its gacha-style progression and technical rough edges.

What Actually Makes Aniimo Different

GameSpot’s hands-on preview highlights the game’s central Twine mechanic. It lets players merge directly with their creatures for real-time combat and traversal, a meaningfully different structure from turn-based Pokémon battles.

The open world, called Idyll, similarly blends creature collection with combat and puzzle-solving. Players can also customize a home base, setting up attractions like fairground rides alongside more traditional creature-training systems.

What Beta Testers Actually Pushed Back On

80.lv reports that three rounds of testing left players impressed by the world and mechanics. However, they remained genuinely divided over technical polish and a progression system that leans on familiar gacha structures.

That’s not a small complaint. In fact, it’s the exact pattern that has soured players on other free-to-play creature collectors before they got past the first few hours.

Steam community discussion around the game has been openly hostile at times. Some commenters have flatly predicted the monetization will follow “every single Chinese free-to-play mobile game” before it, a reaction worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as reflexive hate.

  • What’s confirmed: The game uses a gacha-adjacent system for at least some creature acquisition or progression, though Pawprint Studio hasn’t detailed exact rates or pricing publicly
  • What’s unresolved: Whether the monetization stays reasonable at launch or tightens after the initial goodwill period, a pattern common across the free-to-play genre
  • What to actually watch for: Whether progression genuinely requires spending to stay competitive, or whether the gacha layer stays cosmetic and optional

A Genuinely Massive Bet for FunPlus

FunPlus greenlit Aniimo back in 2022 through Pawprint Studio, its development partner on the project. GamesBeat’s interview with FunPlus chief business officer Chris Petrovic confirms the game already has 19 million pre-registered players.

Petrovic called Aniimo the company’s biggest bet ever, both in budget and ambition. That scale cuts both ways, though: it’s real investment in an ambitious project, but also the kind of budget that creates pressure to monetize aggressively once the launch honeymoon ends.

Launch Details and Platforms

  • Console/PC: Servers open September 15 at 7 PM PT in the Americas, corresponding to a September 16 global launch on Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S
  • Mobile: iOS and Android versions follow September 23, with progress shared across platforms on the same regional server
  • Price: Free-to-play, with the gacha-adjacent system described above

Bottom Line

Aniimo’s Twine mechanic and open-world structure are a genuine design swing, not a lazy reskin, and that deserves credit regardless of where the game came from. Still, the real test isn’t whether it resembles Pokémon closely enough to earn scorn.

Instead, it’s whether Pawprint Studio can keep its progression system fair once 19 million pre-registered players actually start spending real money. Beta testers already have doubts, and this week’s launch is the first real chance to see whether those doubts were justified.
