A moderator at developer Jagex, who was part of the Old School Runescape team, has been let go after it was discovered that they had been involved in the theft of as much as 100 billion in-game gold from players. Considering Old School Runescape gold can be worth around $1 per million, that's a near $100,000 theft, which is why the police have now gotten involved.
This all started with one player claiming on Reddit that they had lost some 45 billion worth of in game gold to some sort of hack. While some claimed they simply hadn't protected themselves well enough, it has now come out that a Jagex moderator was involved and they may have stolen a lot more from others in the past.
"We confirm that a Member of The Old School Team was dismissed from employment at Jagex following gross misuse of moderator privileges," Jagex said in a statement. "During our rigorous routine system checks, irregular activity was identified on small number of accounts, including the movement of wealth and items back into the live game."
Jagex has since returned all of the stolen gold and items to affected players, but has refused to give any further details on the matter since this is now a criminal investigation.
However, this thread at Resetera claims that the suspected thief who has since been let go, is also involved with a clan which is known for DDOS attacking other players during tournaments in order to affect the outcome.
