New York Times Buries PS3

An article in the New York times slams Sony's PlayStation 3 console and claims that the product is unrefined and not ready for public release, all this after having tried the console for over 30 hours and having played 13 games on it.

The article in the New York times suggests that Sony rushed the console to market in an attempt to get some holiday action but may be selling the consumer short in order to do so. The story begins by stating that the PS3 ...delivers gorgeous graphics. Only to go on and add that ...they are not discernibly prettier than the Xbox 360's.

Seth Schiesel, the New York times editor behind the story, then moves on to a straight-forward comparison of the XBox 360 and the PS3 and claims that the X360 is user friendly and features an intuitive UI while the PS3 lacks refinement and some basic gear including the high definition cabling required to connect the console to a TV that supports the technology. The comparison continues to find fault with Sony's console and the way its controllers sync and even mentions the inability of the PS3 to allow players to listen to their own music while playing games.

The criticism of the console goes on to mention the Sony online experience which is also presented as unrefined, astonishingly, you can't download in the background while you go do something that's more fun (like play a game). The story however, does praise the online experience in, the quite excellent, Resistance: Fall of Man.

The criticism of Sony's console goes on and on and the gist of the story seems to be that the shortage of consoles may actually help Sony as it needs more time to refine its UI and the overall PS3 user experience. A lot of horsepower but no seats may be the expression that best describes Sony's next-generation offering.

Well I have to say the story sounds rather balanced....Being a hopeful fan of the Wii does taint my opinion a little but I'm no PS3 hater, I Just run with the facts, and after playing 30 hours and 13 games you can be sure its not some lame 20 minutes now lets slag it fest so...Looks less that nice for Sony

The PS3 doesn't have any games worth playing, thats the problem. Maybe one day, but for now it's boring sports titles and thats aboot it. Forget video game sports, go outside and throw a ball around. Forget realistic racing games, just drive around a Wal-Mart parking lot. Simple as that.

I have heard that they are having trouble with the PS3's as well, that they are burning up or something, can't keep them cool. this is unverified of course, because only 5 or 6 people have PS3s at the moment, the rest are for sale on ebay.

The interface for ps3 blows. I hate the fact when i donwload i can't do anything else with the console. Xbox360 is far ahead of the ps3. Even tho i havent had any overheating issues as of yet i'm selling this thing on ebay and will get one a year from now when it has a shed load of improvments to the interface. BTW: THE games basiclaly do suck.

This is not the only person to say this. If you search at Techreport or ign and hardocp they have a link showing a few more game devs and reporters saying the exact same thing. Sony will lose this console war.

I bet none of you have even played a PS3.I've heard, I've seen, People Say, Go try the f**king thing for yourself before dissing it.I installed Linux, I have the developer platform, all the launch games (they were bundled ;). It's the perfect nerd lounge room PC.

-_- Don't even start staying the 8800GTX is better than the ps3. Sure, looking at gpu cores it might look better, but the GDI is totally different for consoles and pcs. for example, the first xbox had a crummy geforce 3 in it, yet look how stunning it makes halo 2 look and you could have a geforce 5 and it still never looked that good for any of your pc games. O yea, and the wii might have a good user design and all, but face it, the graphics are way under par. As for the xbox360 vs. PS3, you really cant go wrong with either one. Its the users preference

Wii will dominate the next gen wars, just give it time and ps3 will go into the history books as a system with major hoursepower without anything interesting about it (PSP dejavu anyone?) and the Wii will go down as a revolution. I'm affraid it's X360 vs Wii this generation.

"The story begins by stating that the PS3 ...delivers gorgeous graphics. Only to go on and add that ...they are not discernibly prettier than the Xbox 360’s"And? I guess he things the 360's graphics are pretty good too.

Actually due to unified shader arhitecture Xbox graphic is theoretically superior to PS3, do not bash me, google it.As for G80, It isa also better than PS3. Sony wants this box to be treated like a PC, well here is a PC card that is about 2-4 times faster than 7600* that is in PS3. Has physics built in too.

Anonymousat 0:16 22/11/2006Halo 2 graphics... Not impressive. Go and take a look at a maxed-up Half-Life 2 AND BF2142. THESE ARE GOOD GRAPHICS... Just wait for the next-gen games on PC, they'll OWN both PS3 and X360 games

The GPU inside the Xbox360 makes it superior in graphic capability to the PS3. The CPU does not render graphics. When the PS3 can render 4xAnti-Alaising+High Dynamic Rendering at 16bit precision at the same time with Angle independant Ansiotropic filtering with 48 shader operations, then i will believe the hyperbole Sony is saying. The PS3 cannot do any of those things.

New York Times Buries PS3

@ 17:12Wow, You sure do make alot of stuff up! From your post it seems you have no idea what any of that actually is, why you need it and why the PS3 does do it, far more precise and faster than the USA used with the 360.I mean, Wow, Some of the posts examples don't even exist!

New York Times Buries PS3

OH, in addition, the PS3 doesn't limit shader ops to a physical requirement. Anisotropic filtering by definition is independant of veiw configurations, and 16bpp is obsolete in rasterization. We use 64bpp now ;)

360 had tons missing at launch, PS3 can have more than 1 day to get the experience smoothed out. God knows the 360 didn't have everything from launch - like music playing, a game that sold even a million copies within 6 months (it took till around late summer for CoD2 to break 1 million), and, you know, a cooling system.

New York Times Buries PS3

You guys are forgeting about the almost 1 year delay of the PS3. After Sony saw the 360 they delayed the PS3 to obviously improve it, so it suppost to be great already. They had almost a whole year to improve but its still a piece of junk. And @ 19:34You dont know what the hell you are talking about!!

New York Times Buries PS3

not to defend anyone here but an idiot will counterclaim Xenos gpu superiority to RSX. I wont give u some mindless s**t, but if you got brains and aint full of urself, google it and think twice before u post... Also the fact that most Xbox360 games are 720p and most ps3 are 1080i/p, just slowers PS3 titles down roughly 2 times pixel rendering wise.

New York Times Buries PS3

+ yeah I aint got anything about super hardware out there, cell is certainly something but then again, is it for games(slowering dev time several times)?... But what does piss me off is how sony throws with empty words, says its gonna be such a miracle, and now its out? 70% of things they said were lies, marketing propaganda! and then there is the dorks who defend em, love em because they had ps1,ps2...

Why should we care about graphics in consoles anyway. If you want graphics you want a decent PC NOT a CONSOLE. Consoles should aim for more original and innovative ways of playing games like the Wii is doing and that's why I'm buying a Wii and NOT a X360 or PS3. I'm fine with my PC as it is.

New York Times Buries PS3

I think consoles should cater to party gaming, not gimmicks, thats why I hate all the current consoles and am upgrading MY PC. I'll stick with my PS2 and Xbox. The wii is just f**king gay, the PS3 is uber expensive, and the 360 is a hunk of s**t.I'll also keep my 64 ;)

New York Times Buries PS3

you know what s**ts me, the figgen noobs that think PS3 is gonna be the best thing ever created. just cause they own a lame ps2, which i might add seems more for your money than the ps3! i say let them waist their years pay on this s**t. 360 - half the price, just as good internally, better games, better quality console!

New York Times Buries PS3

Wow! f**king anti-sony fanboys! NEVER see them ANYWHERE and they know EXACTLY what their talking about!Just because you can' afford it like the people who have jobs, it doesn't mean it's only for "Noobs" and " PS3 Fanboys".

New York Times Buries PS3

Anon @ 7:22: How much did your 1080p TV cost? For the $3k you'll spend on your ps3 and nice tv you can build a kickass pc and get a nice monitor. And the setup will own any console out there, period. Don't forget that ps3 won't run all games at 1080p, but most good pc's will.

New York Times Buries PS3

I'm not a fanboy of anything, as I have owned nearly all of the previous generation consoles, but I do like the PC.From my point of view, the PS3 is going to loose big time this time, with the xbox360 1st and Wii a close second (in terms of sale). However, I still favour the Sony PS3 (I f**king hate sony, but am an admirer of superior technology) as it has HDMI 1.3, outputs at 1080p and an internal Blue-Ray drive (I favour HD-DVD, but what you gonna do!!).Now if Micorosft get their act together next year and release a modified xbox 360 with HDMI out, internal HD-DVD and 1080p out, f**k sony, I'm getting an xbox.Sony just don't get it. They have pissed off too many people this time, it is like 1 year late, £420 (in UK) and it is DELAYED in EU on top. That just made my blood boil. I WILL NEVER GET A PS3 just because of sony sticking 2 fingers at us consumers in EU. From my post you can tell that I was more for the PS3 than xbox360, but sony have just pissed me off.btw The wii is a nice novelty christmas gift item :)

New York Times Buries PS3

Stop moaning for f**ks sake. who gives a s**t about ur [refered console. Ur opinion wont make any difference to anything. ohh the 360 is better oh the ps3 rocks ohh the wii is great. shut the f**k up you f**king nerds. instead of getting a console get a girlfriend u losers.
