Game: Forza Horizon 6  |  Developer: Playground Games  |  Publisher: Xbox Game Studios  |  Platform: Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox Cloud Gaming), PS5 (post-launch 2026)  |  Standard Release: May 19, 2026  |  Premium Early Access: May 15, 2026  |  Xbox Game Pass: Day one

Forza Horizon 6 launches globally on May 19, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, bringing the Horizon Festival to Japan for the first time. Revealed at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2025 Broadcast and shown in full at the Xbox Developer Direct in January 2026, the sixth entry launches with over 550 cars, a fully open-world recreation of Japan spanning Tokyo, Mount Fuji, mountain touge roads, and rural coastlines. It is available day one on Xbox Game Pass and introduces new features including Car Meets, the Collector’s Journal, and an Initial D-inspired Touge Battle mode. A PS5 version is confirmed for post-launch later in 2026.

Setting: Japan in Open World

Forza Horizon 6 is set in a stylised open-world representation of Japan, spanning neon-lit city streets through Tokyo, mountain pass touge roads, coastal highways, and rural countryside. According to the official Xbox Wire post, Art Director Don Arceta confirmed: “For a long time, Japan has been top of Horizon fans’ wish lists, so we’re excited to finally be bringing this much-requested location to players in Forza Horizon 6.” According to Eurogamer, Arceta described the map as “full of contrast,” with the urban areas of Tokyo directly juxtaposed against mountainous roads and open fields. The team worked closely with Cultural Consultant Kyoko Yamashita to go beyond location and integrate Japanese culture, festivals, and customs directly into the game’s systems.

The story premise is completely new for the series. According to the official Xbox Wire Developer Direct breakdown, players begin as a fan of the Horizon Festival who has traveled to Japan with the dream of one day being part of it. The Collector’s Journal is a new progression system inspired by Japan’s stamp-collecting tradition. Players collect digital mementos from landmarks, murals, and special locations discovered during exploration, adding a personal layer of progression alongside the traditional Wristband system.

New Gameplay Modes

Forza Horizon 6 introduces two major new gameplay modes. According to GamesRadar, the game features a Touge Battle mode inspired directly by Initial D, with nighttime mountain pass head-to-head racing on winding single-lane roads. The mode captures the atmosphere of Japan’s underground touge street racing culture and is one of the most community-requested modes in the series’ history.

Car Meets are the second major new feature. According to the official Xbox Wire Developer Direct post, there are three permanent Car Meet locations in the game: one at the Horizon Festival site, one at the Okuibuki parking area in the Alps, and one at Daikoku itself. According to the official Forza website, Car Meets are integrated into the shared open world, meaning real players appear at these locations live as you explore with no loading screens. Players can meet others, admire their cars, download custom liveries and designs, and purchase their own version of cars they discover at a meet.

Over 550 Cars at Launch

Forza Horizon 6 launches with over 550 cars across more than 70 manufacturers, the largest launch roster in the series’ history. According to GamesRadar, the confirmed list includes a strong representation of Japanese makes, with Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru all heavily featured given the Japan setting. The cover stars are the 2025 Toyota GR GT Prototype and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. Note that some cars are locked behind paid Car Packs and limited-time promotions rather than being available in the base game. Forza Horizon 5 launched with 500 cars and grew to over 900 through post-launch updates, suggesting the Horizon 6 roster will expand significantly over time.

Free Loyalty Car Rewards

Players who have a history with the Forza franchise receive free cars automatically. According to IGN, any GamerTag that has played Forza Horizon 1 through 5 or Forza Motorsport (2021) will receive the cover car from each of those games as a free gift once the player completes the Tokyo introductory race with Mei. The one exception is Forza Horizon 4, where the 2016 Aston Martin Vulcan replaces the original cover car for undisclosed licensing reasons.

Xbox Series X|S Graphics and Performance Modes

Playground Games officially confirmed the console graphics modes ahead of launch. According to IGN, both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S ship with two rendering options. On Xbox Series X, Quality mode runs at native 4K resolution at 30fps, while Performance mode targets 4K and uses dynamic resolution scaling to maintain a locked 60fps. On Xbox Series S, Quality mode runs at 1440p and 30fps, while Performance mode hits 1080p at 60fps. Both Series S modes use dynamic resolution scaling to maintain target framerates under load.

The game also ships with a range of new accessibility features. According to Traxion.GG, confirmed options include a proximity radar for blind spot detection, auto drive, adjustable HUD position, and high contrast mode. A post-launch update will add American Sign Language and British Sign Language interpreters during cinematics.

Forza Horizon 6 is available in three editions. The Premium Edition is priced at $120 and grants four days of Early Access starting May 15. According to GamesRadar, the Premium Edition does not include all DLC despite its price point. The game is available day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at no additional cost. It is also an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning one digital purchase covers both Xbox and PC.

Bottom Line

Forza Horizon 6 arrives on May 19 as the most ambitious entry in the series yet. Japan was always the dream setting for the franchise, and Playground Games has built something that takes full advantage of it: an Initial D-inspired Touge Battle mode, live Daikoku Car Meets integrated into the open world, a stamp-collection Collector’s Journal, and the most Japanese car-heavy roster the series has ever had. Add 550+ cars, dynamic seasons, day one Game Pass availability, and loyalty car rewards for long-term Forza fans, and the case for diving in is compelling. PS5 players will need to wait, but Xbox and PC players can be on track in four days with the Premium Edition.
