It's been far too long since I used a bird in my backpack to help me reach high ledges, so I can collect musical notes and jigsaw pieces and all of the other miscellaneous items that the original Banjo Kazooie was all about - seriously, that game was all about collecting. But now it might not be too much longer and I won't even have to order new joysticks for my battered controllers, as some ex-Rare developers are said to be working on a spiritual sequel to the classic N64 title.
Together, the "bloke who programmed Donkey Kong Country, the character designer behind Banjo and Kazooie, and the artist who made [the N64] fit to burst with lavish environments across a decade’s worth of adventure games," have made up Playtonic Games and they've admitted they're working on a spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie, one of Rare's most well loved titles.
The news comes from an early preview of the upcoming issue of Edge Magazine, which is set for release tomorrow. In it, we learn that the team at Playtonic is now six strong, with plans to expand up to 15 in the near future. Funding for the game is complete and while it is initially planned for release on Steam via Early Access, the team hope to bring it to the Wii U as well, as Nintendo's platform feels like home to them most of all.
Chris Seavor, the designer and voice of Conker from Conker's Bad Fur Day, said via his company's Twitter that it was nice to see another team of ex-Rare staffers "just up the road." No word on whether there will be any collaboration.
