By the way, my prior remark about 3rd grade level writing, should not be taken to apply to those for whom English is not the first language, Intel supporters or not. I doubt most people here in the USA could write at that level in yours. RedWolf, appreciate your sentiments. My problem is not that Intel chips are unusable, anyone wants to give me a PIV for free, you're welcome. The issue is threefold. They tried to implement a system of spying on their customers through their PSN stamp. Now they claim they won't do that with the PIV, I'll believe it when they're widely shipped. This is just plain wrong, a lesson that not only they need to learn, but the industry, as there are plenty of people pushing it. Two, their dominance has caused them to slack. The release of the PIV has been repeatedly delayed, and they have been hesitant to release benchmarks. There is speculation among many experts that in many ways it will underpreform a PIII, ([url removed] Not to mention the recall of the PIII 1.13GHz on July 31. Third, their pricing structure. An 800MHz seems to be a good investment for a serious gamer. Looking around for a good price on the 512k cache, I ran across this site, [url removed] The PIII 800 was $421, the Athalon 800 was $225. For the extra $200, I can get an Nvidia TNT2 128bit 32 MB AGP video card, PLUS 64 MB PC133 RAM and still have $50 left over!!! If you choose the Intel option, how stupid can you be!!! But then what can you expect from fans who's most intelligent argument is to shout obscenities.

Well I have to disagree as I have a Amd K6-2 350 (yes i am still using a 350) and my computer runs all of the latest games fine and does not crash at all and i am using windows 98!!!!! Infact I the last time it crashed was about 4 months ago and that is running the latest games so as you can imagine that is puting it under quite a lot of pressure.

People have more reasons not to like "Intel" (Their chips), people don't like Intel for nothing.

If you prefer Pentiums over AMD then stay with Pentiums. If you prefer AMD over Pentiums stay with AMD. I have used both numerous times. I have hand built hundreds of custom PCs using both sets of Processors. For certain things each processor has its own Niche. AMDs seem to load quicker and run a little less stable. (In My Opinion at least). But for all of you Pentium fans out there, you arent out of the woods yet either. P IIIs have a nasty tendency to be unreliable. I have seen 5 or 6 out of a dozen eat themselves beacuse of the on going heat issues. If you can keep the CPU real cool then Pentiums are not to bad. But as for the price wars, if you want to spend more money on a Pentium do so but thn spend even more to keep the thing cool. If you want to spend less money and get an AMD then do so just be prepared for the Hardware in compatibility that you at some point WILL face. Both have their Pros and Cons, so it is really a matter of preference as to which way you want to go. But i dont think any of us are really in a position to call each processor pieces of **** unless you have made one yourself that outperforms AMD or Pentium by a 100 fold. If you want to know i have to AMD athlons and to PIII ( one 600 and one 800 ).Thanks for your time!

Submitted by Skaboy (not verified) onI have built my own computer, I used an AMD K6-2 500mhz (It cost me $60 a few months ago!!! with a heatsink+fan and a lifetime warranty-talk about value- ), and it works great. I haven't had a hardware conflict or anything, most of the computer conflicts are caused by the software installed, software creates conflicts with each other. For the price and performance (same or better than more expensive CPUs) I rather use AMD. Maybe people think that because AMD's processors cost less theyare less quality, but that's not the case. I'm glad with AMD. If you are planning on using a GEforce ddr in Quake3 Arena, and 256MB of pc100 RAM or 128MB of Rambus Ram, better choose a good motherboard first (Choose one that supports 4x AGP, and that accepts lots of RAM, then choose an Athlon processor, Athlons have 3DNOW!and MMX (Pentiums only have MMX) instructions which make games run faster (AMD is part of the American Gaming League). If you want to spend more buy a Pentium, otherwise get an Athlon processor for hundreds less usually with better performance, that's up to you on how much you want to spend, all I'm telling you is that Athlons are cheaper and perform better. :)

Then I compared my stats with other computers. The Athlon with a Geforce 2 had everyone beaten at it was like 5000 points. It took out the Pentium 3s they had there easily. Submitted by Davros (not verified) onJust to re-iterate a couple of Skaboy's comments. Cannot stress enough the importance of having a good motherboard. A poor one can make any chip look bad, along with the rest of your hardware. ASUS makes some pretty mean ones, but they're a little more spendy. If you do some shopping at a site that lists the stats, you can get a feeling for how various features compare. As I've said, for AMD, I've had good luck with Apollo VIA chipsets. For Intel, they also make chipsets, and there's supposed to be a really hot one for the PIII. If you're gonna spend the bucks on one of their chips, might as well get the board designed for it. The other point he mentioned is software being the major cause of conflicts/incompatability. This can be true in general, but particularly in the case of hardware drivers. I almost never use the ones packaged with a piece of hardware. Go to the company site and download the most recent. There's always someone running something in a combination they didn't forsee in the lab, causing a crash. When these get reported, the updated drivers usually resolve those problems. Even after I've been using something for awhile, I will still check for newer drivers, and often am rewarded with noticable improvement in the piece.

Intel Announces Pentium 4 Brand Name For New Microprocessor
Submitted by Davros (not verified) onYes, and is Big Brother inside? Until they stop their Nazi-esque identification of the PC, broadcast from the chip, everywhere on the internet the user goes, I will never buy another Intel product again. This is from a person who argued with everybody in the know when Pentium first came out, extolling it's virtues. "32-bit processing is useless, the buss and peripherals are all 16, and no one's writing software that really needs it." I said otherwise. But Intel sold me, and everyone else out to a police-state/marketing society. Yeah, you can turn the ID function off, if you know what you are doing. How many average PIII users do that? This means that if this keeps up, in the future one cannot visit many sites on the internet without identifying yourself, "access denied." The truth is, AMD's Athalon was faster first. They are certain to come out with one that will beat P4 soon. Until then, a 1 gig Athalon will just barely idle for most games out there, especially if you have say an NVIDIA 32 meg AGP video card, which you're a loser of a gamer if you don't have something equivalent anyway. Not only does a 1 gig Athalon outpreform any PIII out there, it's ridiculously cheaper. But of course, all you nice citizens would like to line up for your bowls of millet, while chanting "Sieg Hiel!", safe in the knowledge that Big Brother knows where you are at all times, and is looking out for your best interests.

The Athlon ran faster than p3 and the lower frequency athlons outweighes the higher frequency pentiums!!! Also the processors are far cheeper. if it wasnt for intels ad campains where each pc manufacturer which mentions the p3 has to have that crappy tune and the crappy animation, amd would be far ahead of them, oh well theres no point mentioning this to u lot, u just go with what they tell u to go with.

Submitted by Davros (not verified) onHowever you did your comparison test, you must have been smoking banana leaves or something. I currently have a Pentium 60, Pentium Pro 200, AMD K6-2 200, 233 and 400. Regarding a 133 running games that require a 200, that's child's play. My Pentium 60 was running games that required 133, not hard to do if you've got extra RAM, or have a clean system. Was also running things on my K6-2 200 that were supposed to require more. Pentiums crash just as much as AMD, perhaps more. I have had to maintain the computers at work as well as my own, and have had problems with all of them crashing. Most of these were due to people, I repeat, people installing programs incorrectly, or doing things they shouldn't. Another issue is that the K6 and early K6-2s did not have good floating point capabilities. They not only addressed that with the 3D-now revision, that is when they began to outpreform Pentiums. There are also systems built with incompatible hardware, and Intel chip will suffer from this just as much as an AMD. I make it a rule to always buy a motherboard at the same time I buy a chip, getting ones that work together. That way, as I accumulate parts, I can later cobble another system together also. If your AMDs are crashing frequently, you're doing something wrong along the above lines. Regarding Dragunov's question, last time I was at [url removed] they had a DFI with 4 each of ISA and PCI with an Apollo VIA chipset, practically for free. Apollo VIA runs AMD very well, and they have 1 meg onboard cache, with that combo my K6-2 400 outpreforms a Pentium II 500. Intel's reputation, pah! It's a rule of law, if you have a reputation, you don't have to worry, you can overcharge, and cut corners, because people will buy your product anyway. You can see that with any product, the other guys try harder, because that's the only way they can compete. Again, in all the systems I've worked on, Pentium has at least as many problems.

The pentium 3 with RDRAM and the 133 mhz ram beat every AMD at the same speed, even the thunderbird. If you actually read this instead of ******* on it and saying im just an intel fan your wrong. A 733 coppermine. (Note COPPERMINE ONLY!) beat a 900 Mhz athlon in raw speed performance and in 3D winbench 2000. The 1 GHZ P3 with RDRAM spanked the normal GHZ athlon and T-bord so hard they woulda wish they were never brought in to existance. Yes AMD makes good processors for good prices, BUt the K6-2 an 3, are ****. Anyone who reads this, if you have the money for it, go with intel, no celerons though, if you dont have them money get an athlon, but no durons, we dont need to waste our time with **** thats as fast as a P2 or K6-3 with a slight performance increase.
