Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the retail price of its 3DS to $169.99 in the United States.
This significant price cut of about one third of the handheld's price (32% off to be more precise) is most likely a response to the device's less than expected sales performance. The new price will be effective starting from August 12, but experience tells us that retailers will start offering it a lot sooner than that.
"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games."
