Diablo IV

Diablo IV

Blizzard Entertainment developed and published Diablo IV, the fourth main entry in the long-running Diablo action RPG series. It released on June 5, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Diablo IV combines the series’ classic loot-driven combat with an open world, shared-world online systems, and seasonal live-service support.

About the Game

Diablo IV is a dark fantasy action RPG set in Sanctuary, a world once again threatened by Hell. The story centres on the return of Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, whose influence spreads corruption across the land. You create a hero, choose a class, and fight through story quests, dungeons, strongholds, and world events while building toward an endgame focused on loot and character optimisation.

The game expands the Diablo formula by using a seamless world made up of five major regions. You can explore these areas alone or alongside other online players you meet in the overworld. Towns function as hubs for vendors, upgrades, social interaction, and party formation, while the wilderness is filled with roaming enemies, side quests, and public encounters.

Classes and Character Builds

At launch, Diablo IV includes five core classes: Barbarian, Sorcerer, Druid, Rogue, and Necromancer. Each class has its own skill tree, unique mechanics, and preferred playstyles. Barbarians swap between multiple weapons, Sorcerers focus on elemental magic, Druids shapeshift and command nature, Rogues mix ranged and melee pressure, and Necromancers raise undead armies.

Character progression starts with active and passive skills, then deepens into Paragon Boards at higher levels. Legendary and Unique items can dramatically change how abilities behave, which makes item drops central to every build. This system encourages experimentation and lets players reshape their class around specific gear synergies and endgame goals.

World and Endgame

The campaign takes players through multiple acts across Sanctuary and can be played solo or in co-op. Alongside story quests, the world includes dungeons, cellars, side missions, strongholds, public events, and world bosses. Mounts eventually unlock to make travel across the world faster and smoother.

After the campaign, Diablo IV shifts into an endgame loop built around Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, world bosses, and seasonal progression. Nightmare Dungeons add modifiers and tougher enemies to standard dungeons. Helltides temporarily transform parts of the world into high-risk, high-reward zones, while world bosses require multiple players to defeat them efficiently.

Combat and Online Features

Combat is real-time, fast, and built around cooldown management, positioning, and resource use. Every class has a dodge or evade mechanic, which matters because elite enemies and bosses use large telegraphed attacks that punish poor positioning. The overall pace is more deliberate than Diablo III, but it still delivers the same constant stream of enemies, loot, and explosive ability effects.

Diablo IV is always online and supports cross-play and cross-progression through Battle.net. Players on PC and consoles can group together, and your account progress carries across supported platforms. The game also includes PvP zones called Fields of Hatred, where players can fight each other for special currency and rewards.

Similar Game Key Difference Best For
Diablo III Faster and more arcade-like, with a more linear structure and no true open world. Players who want a more streamlined Diablo experience with years of polished post-launch content.
Path of Exile Free-to-play and much more complex in terms of skill trees, item crafting, and long-term build theory. Players who want maximum depth and do not mind a steeper learning curve.
Last Epoch More traditional and instanced than Diablo IV, with strong skill customisation and flexible crafting. Players who want deep build crafting without Diablo IV’s shared-world structure.
