Crytek has had a difficult couple of years. With lacklustre sales of some of its biggest releases, a beating in the press over its quick-time-event filled, movie-like Ryse: Son of Rome and problems paying staff to the point where it had to close its Nottingham studio, it could do with a break.
Fortunately then, it seems like it might have found one, in the form of a new licensing deal with a big firm that has secured Crytek for the foreseeable future. The only downside is, that it won't tell us who that firm is.
The news comes from a statement made to Develop during a chat at the Game Developers Conference, where Crytek co-founder Faruk Yerli and head of PR Jens Schaefer said that they had been trying to get the licensing deal together for a long, long time and that finally doing so had saved the company's bacon.
Initially it was thought that Crytek had been saved by an investor, but it seems instead that whatever licensing deal was made was a big one.
Since the developer hasn't specifically stated anything about a game, it could be that a movie or similar other-medium is being made about one of Crytek's properties, say Crysis. However it could also be that it's been paid by a publisher to make a game about another property entirely.
What do you guys think Crytek is up to?
