AMD chops prices

We have in our hands a new, but incomplete, AMD OEM price list, due to take effect from 9 October. However, we understand that AMD may be having second thoughts (over timing, as opposed to pricing). And who could blame the company for making hay, while Intel don't shine.

Full details of the price cuts are not yet available - and AMD refuses to confirm or deny that a price move was in the pipeline - but if the changes we've seen are matched across the board, Intel should be worried.

An 850MHz Athlon drops by more than 50 per cent from around $350 to $165, while the little Duron 600 moves from $79 to $53. Other revised prices include Athlon 700, 750 and 800MHz at $116, $130 and $149 respectively.

I think that the price drop is going to be a good thing. Finally you can get a processor that kicks butt without getting your butt kicked at the checkout. I have always believed in AMD and they have YET to dissapoint me. AMD Rules and Intel Drools.

Just a little foot note for the UNKNOWN commenter in this forum. If you are having a problem with your AMD chip. There are 2 places that you can look. Hardware, some MB's dont like the chip that well. But the 1st place I would look is the airspace between the keyboard and the chair. I have run a business based on AMD PC's and have LESS repairs on them and LESS problems than I'smell (<----Intel for those mentally challenged people like UNKNOWN)chips. AMD is faster, runs cooler, and has a far better design than Intel and I feel better for having one. I will tell you the same thing that I tell Harleys when they make fun because I ride a Yamaha, My bike is and 85 MINT condition 700 Maxim, and unlike you on the Harley I dont NEED to ride with a tool kit. I just ride. I am sure you can figure out the analogy.Sincerely,Jeffrey Krantz

although i agree the amd pricing is very attractive realsitically they do not have the performance especially in respect of video processing then the intel PIII chips offer, but for the non perfectionist AMD offer excellent value for money ,but as with everthing you buy,simply...YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET!

OBAMech I agree with you 1000%. Intel has loads of problems and tons of bugs just waiting to appear. Unknown you rant like a child. Be intelligent, at least TRY to have a point. Make for a better posting. As for Robbie well, how can I say this. INTEL SUCKS. I have done vidoe editing on the P3 at work and on my AMD at home. I would put my AMD against the Intel any day.Problem with Intel is that they spend all this money on advertising and then delays delays delays.. and for what. A over priced processor that I cannot stand to use due to the lockups the OE errors and slow frame rate for games. Face it. AMD makes a better product and I will be happy to support them all the way. OBAMech is right. If you would have used an approved MB for AMD as well as an approved Power Supply then you would not have these issues. Go back to school and learn how to do it right.. Read that is.

AMD with their seventh generation Athlon architecture rule. Intel still have the crappy previous generation architecture used in their old pentium and P-II chips. As far as i am concerned, the Athlon and Duron are much better performers. For proof go to [url removed] for benchmark tests. Also the AMD chips are much cheaper so Intel are really getting the crap kicked out of them right now. Also the P4 is nothing great either. It is said to be slower to for general apps when running at the same clock speed as its little brother the P-III. Trust me i'm a fourth year engineer studying Electronics and Microcomputer systems engineering.

My K6-2 350 @400 still gets the shit kicked out of it my a PII at the same speed. But an Athlon 550 that my friend has plays everything perfactly at 30 fps. Its kinda sick actually... and we have the same vidcard! I will have 128 MB ram soon, that will help A LOT I'm sure.

Someone obviously ticked off 'unknown'.It's painfully obvious that majorityrules here on this board. The majorityof the posts are of people stating thatAMD rocks and Intel, well, you get thepoint... I also agree with this. Ihave spent years building and testingcomputer hardware and I have not had asmany problems with any other chip thanthose made by Intel. AMD has constantlybeaten them not only in performance butalso in price. I would recommend an AMDprocessor to anyone over an Intel anyday. Just look at the facts. Check outany site or programs that tests speedsand performance. Never mind, don'tcheck. I'll tell you the results. AMDwins hands down. In most cases, thephrase "you get what you pay for" isactually true. Not in this case. Youpay much less for a much better product.Any comments, post away. Not that Ithought 'unknown' would return after hisearlier thrashing.

Well, I thought I'd just throw my support on deck, too. I just built a T-Bird 850, and whew what a machine!! I can't wait for more price drops... I feel the need.... the need for speed!! T-Bird 1.2G here I come!!! :)

Oh yea, one more thing. I build PC's for a living, and am an avid gamer! Test after test, the Athlon outperforms Intel head-to-head almost across the board. And, both WindowsME and W2K like the T-Bird! Get the right AMD supported components (MB, Vid, RAM, etc.) and you won't have any trouble... unless of course you are grey-matter deficient. ;)
