AMD shipping 1.2 gigahertz Athlon

Advanced Micro Devices Inc said on Tuesday it had begun shipping its 1.2 gigahertz Athlon processors to major computer companies, reclaiming the lead for the fastest microprocessor on the market. The chips, priced at $612 each, are expected to be available in computers made by Compaq Computer Corp , Gateway Inc , and Hewlett-Packard Co .

With capabilities that are bound to inspire the most hardcore gamers and multimedia users, the 1.2GHz AMD Athlon processor will allow consumers to enjoy yet another new threshold of computing power with Compaq's Presario 7000 Series of high-end PCs, further enhancing the Presario brand's reputation for cutting edge performance and value," said Mark Vena, Director of CTO Product Marketing, Compaq Computer Corporation.

"Budget buyers on the search for a 'can do' PC will find it in the build-to-order HP Pavilion home PC powered by the 800MHz AMD Duron processor," said Tom P. Anderson, Direct Consumer Business Manager for HP's North America Consumer Computing Organization. "HP plans to offer these new AMD Duron processor-based HP Pavilion home PCs beginning in November at retail kiosks nationwide and direct from HP."

Pricing
The 1.2GHz, 1.1GHz, 1GHz, 950MHz, 900MHz and 850MHz AMD Athlon processors are priced at $612, $460, $350, $282, $215, and $193, respectively, each in 1,000-unit quantities. The 800MHz, 750MHz, and 700MHz AMD Duron processors are priced at $170, $112 and $88 respectively, each in 1,000-unit quantities.

WHO THE **** CARES WHICH ONE YOU THINK IS BETTER THEN ANOTHER, JUST SHUT THE **** UP. I'M SICK OF HEARING "well intel's just handey dandy and can't be beaten as it defy's the laws of physics" or some shit, and then another person saying "Well AMD defied the laws of physics long ago and can't even be compared to slow intel's. YOU PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT, I'LL BET YOU DON'T EVEN WORK IN THE COMPUTER FIELD AND HAVE GIVEN EITHER ONE A SOLID CHANCE! I LIKE BOTH AND HAVE NOTHING AGAINST EITHER ONE, SO JUST SHUT UP!!!!

i like both too i have a p3600 and when the p3 1 gig comes down to 300$ im buying one and im willing to wait, but in the mean time im going to build a thunderbird system 1 gig so i have the best of both worlds and my friends can lan more often with me...So Stop bickering and enjoy the games thats what we come to this site for right...its just as stupid as saying the gforce 1,2 is better then voodoo 3,4,5the only difference i see is that gforce runs quake3 better and the voodoos run unreal tournment betterSo go out and game.

I agree! AMD is really movin now! Pentium3s are all but down in the dust. Geez, the only people that buy them are the rich people that are too scared of change. As for the 1.2mhz heat...AMD cpus do tend to get pretty hot...I wouldn't suggest using an retial heatsink. You should get an Alpha PAL6035 or Global Win FOP-38(fan is loud thou). Go here to take a look: [url removed]

Well until I buy the AMD I will not know whether it overheats or not. But you must understand that the faster these chips get, the better heat sinks have got to be. Maybe bigger companies may decide to cash in on this and develop better heat sinks for faster computers

hehe... you guys are crazy... you bet... AMD rocks big time!! I have and K7 800 and it really rocks!! Try it... you won't regret it... try Unreal Tournament in both at same speed 800mhz , software render, and you'll see the diference... hehe... i'm not jokin'... AMD is really good... and yes... they really hit a lot... but... i'm interested in speed... if they're fast.. well... you just need a bigger cooler...

I got a gateway. And man does it blow but they managed to put a big ass heat sink on my athlon 700 with a fan blowing out of the case on top of that. So in that way my processor is quite cooled. I would also like to agree with the statement that intel sucks.

I think its a bit unfair to compare the PIII to the Athalon as the athalon is far for advanced ie 200MHz FSB! Compared to 100-133MHz FSB of the PIII.Just wait till the P4 comes out and everyone will prefer it. Its just a never ending Battle between Intel and AMD!

Can't believe you folks are so stupid. Some of you seem to have a clue, but again and again we see "my *** beats my friends ***." Your ignorant lame-*** personal experience means about as much as a rotting frog in a cupboard. From all the incoherrent babbling, most of these responses are from people who are buying pre-built systems, not bright enough to do their own. You are already scr**** from day 1! Unless you're a rich kid, buying the top of the line $3000 system or more, you are hampering the processor by the other components stuck together like a garbage heap. The best processor can be absolutely crippled by a lame system, particularly the motherboard. Forget personal testemonials, reminds me of the inbred geeks on paid programming. Go to the sites where people who do this professionally are comparing them on equivalent systems. Someone mentioned Tom's hardware, good, there are also others. Particularly pay attention to floating point benchmarks, you people are supposed to be gamers. As for heating, if you can't keep your chip cool, someone should shoot you and remove you from the gene pool.

Just a couple tidbits, (yes, I do have a preference.)If you recall, every previous chip form factor update by Intel always made it unclear whether you should buy the new chip, or a faster version of Intel's older chip. Remember the 100 MHz 486 out at the same time as the Pentium 60, or the Pentium Pro 200 vs. the Pentium II 233? By leaving a gap of 400 MHz in between the Pentium III and 4 at release, Intel is keeping that scenario from happening again. By Q2 2001, (that's after April,) a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 should be available. Even if Intel can keep faster Pentium IIIs off of the market, AMD will not keep faster Athlons off the market while this happens. It will go ahead with 1.2 GHz and faster Athlons that will give the Pentium 4 a run for its money, continuing to be the shortness in Intel's breath and the tingling sensation in its extremities.[url removed]

AMD only could have dreamed about being up against INTEL a year ago and look at them their PISSING all over Intel, i my self have a 600mhz AMD durron and it rocks better than any other intel i have ever seen, even the pentium 3 800mhz feels slower and is slower in the benchmarck test for games + its so much cheaper. SO I SAY GO FOR IT AMD!!!! and BOO to INTEL!!

AMD shipping 1.2 gigahertz Athlon

Hey cool now you can get a Athalon 1200mhz for the same price as a Pentium III 933. When will people stop being so ignorant and realise that the words "Intel Inside" stuck on you case aren't worth the extra $$$. Intel you guys are charging way too much for your CPUs WAKE UP!!!
