ATI Makes X800 Official

ATI has officially launched its X800 series of graphics cards, formerly known as R420. The boards will come in two flavors, the RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition available later this month for USD 499 and the RADEON X800 PRO, available immediately for USD 399.

As expected the RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition will be powered by a 16-pipe pixel processing engine clocked at 520MHz. To take advantage of the massive pixel processing power the product has been paired with high-speed 1.12GHz data rate GDDR3 memory and a 256-bit memory interface.

The RADEON X800 PRO, will be powered by a 12-pipe pixel processing engine clocked at 475MHz. A 256-bit memory interface and GDDR3 memory with a 900MHz data rate. The RADEON X800 PRO is shipping immediately and customers can purchase it online through major retailers in North America starting today.

The official announcement also includes some information on the features of the new cards including details on 3Dc normal map compression and developer testimony on the applications of 3Dc.

The RADEON X800 includes new features that will enhance a gamer's experience immediately and will help game developers deliver great games for the future. For example, ATI's new compression technology 3Dc, will easily allow game developers to create better-looking games by using high-resolution normal maps. Normal maps are used to give characters and scenes high levels of detail without the performance hit that would normally be associated with using high-polygon models. For gamers this means that their games will look better than ever without impacting performance, which is of utmost importance in high definition gaming.

As soon as we began working with normal mapping in our games, we quickly realized that one of our biggest bottlenecks was going to be the memory usage of un-compressed normal map textures. Up until now, our only options have been to use some kind of low-quality compression, or to cut back on the number and size of normal mapped assets, said Rowan Wyborn, Irrational Games. With 3Dc, we finally have a high-quality compression solution that gives almost perfect results, with 4:1 savings in texture memory. This will allow us to put much finer detail into objects than we could previously and increase the number of normal mapped assets we can put in our games without blowing our texture budget.

Ritual Entertainment will use ATI's new 3Dc normal map compression technology to double the detail in our next generation game environments, said Doug Service, Director of Technology Development, Ritual Entertainment. Thanks to ATI, we can now create normal maps with twice the amount of detail that use the same amount of memory as our original uncompressed normal maps. This will lead to an outstanding increase in visual fidelity for the characters and the entire scene. Ultimately, what ATI's 3Dc normal map compression technology means to gamers is more highly detailed game worlds and a more immersive game play experience.

The RADEON X800 builds upon ATI's success delivering visual processors for the high-end gaming and computer enthusiast market. Currently nearly 80% of high-performance DirectX 9 graphics cards shipping are powered by ATI's visual processors, said Dean McCarron, Mercury Research. The new RADEON X800 series visual processors demonstrate ATI's continued focus on the high-end segment of the PC graphics market.

ATI and its worldwide board partners will offer several configurations of graphics boards based on the RADEON X800 chips. Board partners that will be shipping RADEON X800 products include ABIT, ASUS, Celestica, Club 3D, Connect 3D, Creative, Diamond, Elsa, FIC, Gigabyte, Hightech Information Systems, Info-Tek, MSI, Sapphire, Tul, VisionTek, Xpertvision and Yuan.

System Integrators including ABS, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Velocity Micro, VoodooPC and ZT Group will include the RADEON X800 in their systems for customers who want the ultimate gaming PC.

First off-this board really does need to be moderated. Also if Nvidia will take advantage of Doom ]I[, and this is the motivation for buying the 6800, then you might as well built a special Doom 3 case, monitor with Doom 3 imprinted on the sides, keyboard and special Doom 3 mouse, and a swamp cooler to sit on as you wheel yourself down the Doom III Machine to extinctville. ATI won. Seriously its over, period. Call out the fat lady.P. Catylst dr.x800 release n10-309sect.

no AA and AF is cpu bound, so running high aa, res, shows in the future when games put more strain on cards, then ATI will beat nVidia in no aa and af. Also i think 3DC is THE feature to have on your card, it's getting a lot of support and it's very useful.ps. people who whine about ATI's opengl performance: ATI is rewriting their OpenGL driver from scratch.

Well, you can call out the fat lady but she won't sing. By the time she does sing, she might be skinny. Point being, by the time the cards are actually proven, too many people will already have bought one card or the other and one side will be dissapointed. Also I am very glad this form is not moderated. One of the very few forums where guests (like me) can post their thoughts for everyone to see without registering for stuff we don't want or need.

Also, I think both companies are doing a disservice to consumers (us), moving from one generation of cards into another generation too fast. Apparently Nvidia and ATI don't follow the economies of scale rule. Consumers would be served best if these companies actually brought out these products in quantity. I am not talking about a ticky tack 10,000 pieces. The larger the quantity of hardware in the market, the lower the price for consumers. However, these companies are happy to move on to a new product cycle before even having a decent quantity of "old" generation cards in the market. This why these cards are skyrocketing in price. 499 big ones for an ATI x800XT? You know, that part will still be hovering around 400 dollars even after a year. Why? The new product cycle will start (new product cycle every year) and before even all the features of these "new" cards are explored, we will be on to a nice expensive low quantity of "next gen" cards that will probably cost even more. What is next? $600? $700?

Also, I have come up with a cunning plan, heheh. I am going to play the devil's advocate ... actually his yes-man and say that TSMC and IBM should steal nvidia and ATI's processor designs. They can cut out the middle men and produce cards way more cheaply for the the general public. Then, when nvidia and ATI (both money grubbing by the way) go out of business ... the human capital can be gathered up from the two graphics companies and we will be left with TSMC on one hand and IBM on the other ... maybe even UMC can get in on the backstabbing. Let the backstabbing begin. ATI, nvidia are way too comfortable sitting there at the top of the add in graphics card markets. Anyway, that is my cunning plan. Or really just an evil dream.

Just remember, they are both businesses. You can't trust them to tell you accurate innformation. These test are all done under controlled conditions anyway under direct supervision of nvidia and ATI. Whatever is what I have to say to these benchmarks. I have no 3.2 ghz equivalent cpu ... most people don't either. Too many variables. No one can know how they perform until they try both and see for themselves. However, I doubt anyone is crazy enough to spend almost a 1000 bucks to test anything.

Haha maybe they should, anyways I just got my X800pro from ATI's site. I'm currently playing Halo, this game looks so beautiful on this card. The water especailly, but not better than Farcry's water of course. I can't believe how awsome the IQ is. Video also looks great on this card, even the desktop look clear and sharp with more vibrant color. I'm playing halo on 1600x1200 85hz. Frame rate is smooth with no slow down, thanks ATI.

"What is next? $600? $700?"cantasy, the 6800Ultra Extreme with that ridiculus water block cooling setup will cost $699.99US the minimum. And if Nvidia and Gainward are lucky, that card for $200 more then ATI's flagship(not including the extra $100 you need to spend on a power supply upgrade to 480W) will be on par or just a little bit faster. Nope. Not for me. The real deal is the 800pro 12 pipeline wersion for $399.99 that runs the same speed as the 6800ultra in some tests and only loses out in others by small margins.

"The record score of 15,738 in 3DMark2003 was set using the default screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels with 32-bit color depth, as required by Futuremark for eligibility in Futuremark’s Hall of Fame. A record score of 33,484 was also set in Futuremark’s popular 3DMark2001 benchmark at the same resolution."Wow... lol 33k in 3dmark2001... what a bomb

ATIs new record"ATI actually distributed a press-release about this, they must be proud :) On the System Builders' Summit in Barcelona a new world record score of 15,738 was set in Futuremark's 3DMark2003 graphics benchmark, easily breaking the previous score of 10,008, which was also set using ATI x800 XT. The record score of 15,738 in 3DMark2003 was set using the default screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels with 32-bit color depth. All applications were run on a system featuring an overclocked RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition running at 715 MHz engine clocks and 639 MHz memory clocks, an overclocked Intel Pentium 4 Processor, 1 GB of DDR SDRAM."And everyone thought that they could only go as far as 600Mhz, tho probably it has been refrigerated, but hey if it hasnt, i can see a lot of more powerful cards popping up after the XT-PEAnd nVidia say they have the answer with their 6800 EXTREME, ooooo scarey, and they are having trouble clocking their card higher than 500Mhz!

"After talking with quite a few top-level developers, all of whom are working on future titles, we’re not thoroughly convinced that SM3.0 will be a must-have feature anytime soon – certainly not of the remainder of 2004.""Sure there has been a lot of recent attention regarding Shader Model 3.0 and we had to ask ATI why they didn’t include it this time around. They told us that it was their focus to deliver a product that’d bring the zenith of performance to games coming out in the next 12-18 months bar none – to include unused features would’ve made the chip larger, consuming more heat and power. We’ve been told that ATI will definitely have a new GPU out by the time SM3.0 is a relevant issue."-GAMERSDEPOT-Once again ATI has gone the smart route. And it has paid off again. And you can almost bet OEM'S are going to love the R420 cards over the NV40 because of it's size and little power use.....

DeQuosaekat 12:58 6/5/2004Hey what do you know, I just got x800pro from a local store, spend 50 minutes to install and configure.____________________________Nice try. Everyone knows I wouldn't waste the money buying it from a local store when you could get it much cheaper online! :)Plus I wouldn't buy it right away anyway. I can save another 100 bucks just by waiting a few months. And yes, PCI express probably won't be of much benefit right away, since there's plenty of bandwidth left in the 8xAGP. I think once they get fast enough to use the bandwidth that's currently available, then PCIx will start to make a difference. It might provide power without the need for a connector, but that power still comes from your power supply in the end.

The 6800Ultra is the fastest card out bar none. It totally smokes the 800xt in every benchmark. What the f**k are you guys smoking to say the 800xt is faster. Assholes. Image quality for the 6800 is also miles above any ATI card. Better aa anyday of the week. As for farcry. ATI cheated in the benchmark to get those inflated scores. Nvidia rocks on all accounts. The 6800extreme card will absolutely destroy the 800xt by miles the same way the 5950 destroys the 9800xt. ATI is such a crappy company. Nvidia has captured the crown again. Then again they had it all along. ATI just cheats in all benchmarks and games. Personally, i dont mind a larger card. Little piss ass ATI cards are shit

ATI Makes X800 Official

Hahaha Phil what kind of dumb jrky moron are youI wanna see some proof of what you are saying... give me some link that Nvidia is better in image quality and in all benchmarks...i think you are the little pissed one... pooor baby nvidia lost go cry to your mother

Looks like ati is owning the Nvidiots again. Almost 90 percent of the reviews todate have said the ati line is faster in almost every test and even its lowest card the x800pro can beat the nvidiots Highest rated card in several tests. They also say atis card blows the nvidiots card away when as usual af and aa are enabled. Another funny thing, atis card smacks the nvidots card in ut2004. I think nvidia needs too change that slogan " the way its meant to be played" to something like the way it Use to be meant to be played way back in the year 2002 when the gf2 lines owned ati. Also 3 different web sites said the drivers of nvidia crack and just dont work when u enable certain settings like aa etc etc and atis drivers seem to be flawless so far. Looks like you nvidiots also cant say your drivers own anymore... just wait tell you see what atis new driver looks like. You nvidiots will piss your pants. Hmm and did i mention how rediculous your card is.. 4800WATTS 2 POWER CONNECTORS 2 SLOTS AND that REDICULOUS sized heatsink... haha, even if you nvidots wanted one you'd have to make so many changes like new powersupply, maybe new case if you have a small one like a shuttle for example and of course the fact you'd be buying a card that is inferior in speed to the new ati cards and ohh, once again, your card costs more cuz it costs more to produce ..... lol you poor nvidots.... turn over to the lights and join ati...

ATI Makes X800 Official

$400 dollars is a good price? In fairy land or what? For those of us who have jobs and who need to pay bills, that card is not an option either. ATI and nvidia need to furthur slow down product cycles and start putting out products in quantity. It is you people who keep buying cards at an insane price who make these companies think they can get away with highway robbery. That is what it is.

ATI Makes X800 Official

Yup. I use nvidia always have but i wont be buying that new vidio card. Not only are the specs to use the card too demanding after reading several different reviews I myself must say ATI is really making nvidia look like a company that truely is inferior in the engineering department. You've just got yourself a new customer ati.

ATI Makes X800 Official

as soon as i see someone walk out with a shiny new ATI X800 i'm gonna beat the shit out of him and take it for my self!!!be afraid be very afraid cuz you just might be jumped when you walk out of the store with you X800!

ATI Makes X800 Official

Well, I'm a ATI fan boy, used Nvidia few times and hated it. But I'm a little confused with what ATI are doing. I really don't think these cards will be able to beat the Geforce 6800, purely on the fact they don't support PS 3.0. et's hope ATI pull there pants up after this little set back and make a new card quick which can support it. I'm going to wait till PCI express before I get my new card!- Wills out

ATI Makes X800 Official

lol, anon can't spell. I'm not picky either way. ATI cards are faster atm, but nvidia has, and always has had better drivers. And they update them, like ever 30 secondsI'm a game coder, and although the new compression technique looks really cool and seems to work well, for the moment, its these new cards only. Who the f*ck is gonna produce a game designed for one videocard? I sure as hell wouldn't.I don't trust 3D Mark 03. Both nVidia and ATI started cheating and i just feel like it isn't a good games test.Thats my 2 cents. I probably won't come back here, so you can flame me all ya want ya sad f*cks
