ATI New Board With 32 Pipelines

The latest information released from Canada regarding ATIs monstrous R520 board, also known as Fudo, mentions the magic 'pipeline' word, a key element of the battle for graphical supremacy last year. Many might remember how the number 16 seemed to be the holy grail of both manufacturers and how stunned we all were that the companies involved could produce such monstrous boards carrying so many transistors and not be responsible for the melting of the polar ice caps.

Well this time ATI claims that its new range of boards will carry in excess of 300 million transistors meaning that, at least in theory, it will be able to feature 32 pipelines. It's time for gamer jaws to drop again as this will mean that the boards will feature twice as many pipelines as their predecessors. The current line of thinking at ATI is to have all boards with 32 pipelines but to restrict the first few versions to 24 functioning ones and to gradually introduce the full 32 enabled versions when market conditions and competitor products demand them.

ATI is rather keen to begin making its presence felt on the Top 20 3DMark hall of fame, as the recent failed attempt in Texas clearly demonstrated. The R520 could be the card to bring that success to ATI since it should be capable of performing at least twice as fast as the X850 meaning it should outperform even current SLI setups.

If ATI also manages to introduce its dual-GPU configuration this summer as expected, the resulting performance should run away with the 3DMark crown. I will leave you with the thought of two 32 pixel pipeline R520s running in tandem a game of your choice, how's that for starters?

NOTE :

The picture card is the Crucial RADEON X850XT 256MB PCI Express card and not the R520.

I new ati had trump card to play since nivida came out with there sli, and i bet ati has there own sli in the works, however I bet this card will be cheaper to get than a sli and the 2 top of the line cards you need to beat the one ati card, however i thought it was suppose to be the R500 in the xbox unless mircosoft suddenly decides to switch. Long live Xbox:)

WOW 32 PIPELINES!!!!!!thats a huge jump!i'm sort of a nvidia fan and lookin at this clearly shows me that Nvidia is in trouble!i just can't believe it!WOW...i'm gessin that this new card will be 500 or 600 US dollarsi'm pretty sure that Microsoft and Nintendo won't be using this new card cuz they have already made prototypes which are gonna be show at E3 this year may.

Anonymousat 6:33 18/4/2005of course the r520 will be more powerful than current SLI setups. SLI doesn't offer double performance due to the nature of the setup, but the r520 if it has 32 pipelines will have roughly double performance on ATI's 16 pipeline cards. Although truth is no one really knows whats in the G70 and I wouldn't be suprised if it's a lot.

Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada, although I'm certain they're really really nice.I have a Prime Minister, not a president.I speak English and French, not American. And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.I believe in peace keeping, not policing, diversity, not assimilation, and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch, and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!Canada is the second largest landmass! The first nation of hockey!and the best part of North AmericaMy name is Joe!!And I am Canadian!!!

"ati doesent need sli technolagy because gefore 6800GT run at core 350mhz wtf is that crap ati has the power in all the ways>>> sli to graphics cards to make the power of one 850xt how perthetic of G-ay-force 850xt core at 580mhz"1. the geforce 6800gt is supposed to rival the x800xl, not the x850xtpe.2. performance-wise, the 6800gt is much closer to the x850 than clock-wise, which shows that nvidia cards perform much more efficent than ati's at the same clocks (has anyone of you ever clocked a x850 down to the 6800ultra clocks? i did, and the 6800u pwned it). i'm not saying that the 6800u is better than the x850, but more efficent per clock. both cards are great, but technology-wise, the 6800u is far superior

Heh heh heh, nVidia's tossed out it's UE edition and is working on something else. If ATI has this, then nVidia's going to bring something better to the market WITH a sli setup.Notice, however, that punch for punch nVidia hasn't responded to the x850 series yet, all the 6800s are meant to be compared with the x800s.Dual core SLI video cards, heh heh!

There are several things which positively sh!t me when it comes to video cards these days:1) Release cycles are getting shorter and shorter, almost to the point of becoming a damn joke. This release merely illustrates my point. You just don't know when the hell to upgrade. For all we know, nVidia may have a 64 pipeline board in the works.2) When new hardware comes onto the market, slightly older (but still high quality) hardware vanishes from the market entirely. WTF has happened to the 5900s, 5950s and 9800XTs???? For all intents and purposes they're still decent cards. It's like they don't even exist anymore.3) The mass migration to PCI-X is completely unwarranted. AGP is still not being utilised to its full potential, yet people are screaming "PCI-X!! PCI-X!!!". The advantages and benefits of PCI-X right now are purely THEORETICAL. Check the benchmarks at THG if you don't believe me. It'll be YEARS before manufacturers can make PCI-X hardware that CLEARLY outperforms AGP. I feel sorry for all the morons who ran out and got new mobos just so they can get a new video card. And don't get me started on the price of new cards now.

I don't really care which company is on top, as long as they give decent support to alternative os's like Linux. NVIDIA gives great linux support by comparison to ATI, which is one reason I use NVIDIA at the moment. Also, keep in mind that the article said that the transistor increase made it "theoretically" possible to have 32 pipelines, so it may not work out that way, but here's hoping. Also, that card is huge!

if u guys want to see some real power, then try checking out the 8 gig video TUBES (big enough to hug) that Harris is running. 3d map of the entire us. goes anywhere any position in snap. But just for the record, Nvidia is better than ATI.

1. ATI has more market share than Nvidia.2. ATI has the fastest PC Card X850XT PE.3. ATI hardware runs better in DX9 Apps.4. ATI runs better in shader intensive games.5. ATI was first to come out with a 256bit memory bus, 8 pixel pipeline, and DX9 support.6. Nvidia f**ked up on the NV30, and shutdown its production, ATI has never f**ked up a release.7. ATI has beaten Nvidia with the same f**king core for years now based on the R300.8. Nvidia is f**ked for life.9. The R520 will be a behemoth.

Anyone thinking this card is going to put Nvidia out of business is out of their mind... Competition is good. In a few monthes Nvidia will come out with a card that beats this, then ATI will respond with an ever better card ...etc...

ATI New Board With 32 Pipelines

Enigma you don't know shit. ATI basically took over the market with the introduction of the R300. Nvidia will not go the 90nm, route because remember how painful it was for them when they switched over from 150nm to 130nm. You must admit that ATI knows how to design a GPU. You are right that the R520 will not put Nvidia out of business, however it will further the gap between the two giants. Nvidia does not have the skill to make such a card. Nvidia ripped all of you fags off with their shitty inefficient PS 3.0. AJAX is right look how long ATI milked the R300 core. Nvidia spent millions on new gpu development only to get slammed by ATI's old designs.

oh man, here we go again.first news of the new cards and the fanboys are at it within hours.why bother until you at least hear what nvidia is bringing out.and at the end of the day both types of cards with that much power will pretty much be equal and run all your games at max

'Anonymousat 1:7 2/4/2005Nvidia i'm lossing hope in you, if anyone is aware that Nvidia has a secret card please do share. 'doh, u think nvidia just gave up and stopped development after the gf6?ofsourse they have a secret card that will probably be announced pretty soon after ati reveal some more specs of theirs

Here we go again, yet another GFX card upgrade... YAWN!Technology is just changing too fast, all they are interested in is the money these days.Anyone on here remember the Amiga 1200?I owned an Amiga for years and played some cool 2D games, but a few years later they started releasing 3D games for it too (Gloom, Alien Breed 3D, to name a few), because people took their time to push the technology to it's limits. These days programmers get lazy, and don't even bother trying. An example of this is the sheer amount of ram you need these days to run WinXP, and games. You could do soooo much with just 1MB of ram on a Amiga, but if you have near 1GB or ram on a PC, you still find yourself running out of ram. LOL :D

ATI New Board With 32 Pipelines

Nvidia doesn't have any secret planned card. They were hoping to compete with SLI, than ATI dropped the bomb (R520). ATI went the 90nm route, Nvidia already said that they won't take the risk. That means Nvidia next card will still be on 130nm process so they won't be able to have 32 pipelines and higher clock speeds like the R520 will have because 90nm is like twice as small as 130nm. Futhermore ATI has said that they will show Nvidia how to make a proper PS 3.0 shader card.

Quote:Anonymousat 6:23 2/4/2005amiga was gaming only...-------------------------------No it wasn't. :)In 1993+, I used to compose music on my Amiga 1200 using 'OctaMED' & 'Bars&Pipes'.. I hooked up my MIDI keyboard to my Amiga, and used the Amiga's 8 bit sound for samples. I also used paint packages like 'Deluxe Paint' which was also great for simple flash style animations, and 3D programs like 'Imagine 3D' & 'Lightwave' for professional looking art & anims (although it took an absolute age to render stuff on my old Amiga), to name just a few. ;)

ATI New Board With 32 Pipelines

Enigma you do know that ATI has been around longer than Nvidia right. ATI first started out serving the business and industries. ATI was not really serious about taking over the home desktopmobile market up until a few years ago. Now ATI is at the #1 spot. Read my post carefully, I will repeat myself. The release of the R520MVP will not put Nvidia out of business but only put ATI further ahead. TO make a 300 million+ 90nm GPU it takes amazing skill, something Nvidia does not have.
