ATI Release Catalyst 3.8

ATI Technologies announced the release of CATALYST 3.8, a new unified software suite update that delivers exciting levels of performance, stability and innovation to the RADEON family of desktop graphics products. The first software suite of its kind to hit the 3D market, CATALYST carries a public commitment by ATI of delivering twelve updates a year.

ATI is on a mission to deliver the most stable, performance-driven and feature-rich software possible, said Ben Bar-Haim, Vice President, Software, ATI Technologies Inc. Key industry support and innovative features like ATI OVERDRIVE and VPU RECOVER help us raise the software performance bar, deliver new and exciting experiences to all PC users and further extend ATI's leadership in the industry.

One of the biggest problems with Microsoft Windows has been stability and one of the biggest causes of instability, until now, has been graphics drivers, said Rob Enderle, President and Principal Analyst, Enderle Group, a firm focused on emerging personal technologies. ATI's successful progress in addressing this problem is impressive. The 3.8 version of CATALYST now represents the state-of-the-art in terms of providing a stable, reliable, and feature-rich PC graphics solution.

The new features of CATALYST 3.8 software suite include:

- ATI's unique patent pending feature, OVERDRIVE, which will enable RADEON 9800 XT users to safely maximize the performance level of their graphics processor. OVERDRIVE operates by dynamically over-clocking the graphics processor, while always ensuring that it stays at a safe temperature;
- VPU RECOVER, a patent-pending innovative software recovery feature that enables the display driver to gracefully recover from graphics hardware hangs. This feature also offers a direct feedback and bug report mechanism and marks a major step towards crash-proof PCs;
- The introduction of SMARTSHADER Effects, a feature that delivers high-end shader effects to older games that lack this functionality. Gamers can now experience their favorite games in a totally new visual environment with stunning new shaders such as Inverse-Color, Sketch, Stylized Black & White and ASCII;
- A new sleek re-designed 3D control panel that allows users to create 3D game profiles for their Direct3D and OpenGL applications. Using profiles, users will no longer have to reconfigure every setting each time they use a different 3D application;
- Dedicated Linux support with aggressive driver releases, six times per year;
- The expansion to ATI's MULTIMEDIA CENTER with the addition of a new player application and EAZYLOOK, offers unparalleled value to built by ATI RADEON and ALL-IN-WONDER users;
- The introduction of an easy-to-use and intuitive version of HYDRAVISION. With a redesigned user interface, HYDRAVISION Basic Edition will provide users with the essential features required to configure and easily use a multiple display setup.

man f**k this f**king new driver i have a 9600 pro and i just got these drivers and now my f**king Dungeon Siege game f**ks up about 3 seconds after it loads up a game, i cant figure it out, f**king piece of shit, come back nvidia i need you but you f**ked up too

4% increase is better then Nvidia's 50-60% increase at the expense of killing IQ. I will take a modest increae in performance and increased stability then Nvidia's application specific optimizations that f**k up image quality. And by the way, it's more the 4% Nvidiot....

ATI ownz u Nvidia faggots unless u understoud it. What did Nvidia do to get pass radeon and still didnt, It put its best pices together, f**kin 0.13 nm technology, 256MB fast memory. Feck ATI didnt even bother, they knew they can still beat em with old good 0.15. Whoops, what will happen when 0.13 is out. Poor Nvidiots

YES! I love the new feature that lets you save settings for each individual game. Now if I want to play BattleField 1942 with AntiAliasing And Ansiotropic Filtering turned on but then run Diablo 2 without them I can set it up so I don't have to change the settings all the time. Rad.

I have to agree...Nvidia released thier high end card...the 5800 with unpolished tech and payed for it. ATI is taking a different approach..perfect the .013 on thier lower end cards...then the transistion to the higher core will be easier. I dont think the successor to the xt will be just an xt on .013 tho. ATI has been pushing and pushing hard. Something tells me when they do implement .013 into their next gen card its going to be a major upgrade and not just a clock-bump. Guess will just have to see :)

2003ok here is a quick run down in power level (i own a computer store and i have tested everything to games (10 of the newest games)... not bench marks or overclocked and i get demo products as well)FX5950 i have not tested sorry... but i have heard from some friends that it is slightly slower than 9800 PRO XT1. 9800 Pro XT2. FX 59003. 9800 PRO4. FX 58005. 9700 pro6. 9500 pro (it is DX 9.0)7. 9600 pro8. fx 5600 ultra9. 950010. 960011. fx 560012. fx 5200 ultra13. fx 5200everything else is not DX 9.0 if that does not mater then a few things will change.1. 9800 Pro XT2. FX 59003. 9800 PRO4. FX 58005. 9700 pro6. 9500 pro (it is DX 9.0)7. 9600 pro / TI 46008. FX 5600 ultra9. 9500 / TI 440010. 960011. FX 560012. TI 420013. Geforce 3 TI50014. Geforce 315. Is this Overdrive feature only available on the XT version of the 9800 Pro? How much difference is there between the 9800 Pro and the XT anyhow? I heard it was only a couple of FPS, is that true?Hey my GF4 Ti 4400 overclocked to 320 620 runs fine, but I would like a nice new card to run Doom III and HL2, and it looks like ATI have taken the lead because of all the stuffups with Nvidia and their driver realeases not even rendering properly. And YES I WAS a Nvidia Fanboy untill recently too :P

This is all pretty meaningless anyhow, not far from now, infact it is already being developed, PCI Express is going to take over the graphics market. The AGP port has been pushed as far as it can go, and the PCI-E cards will come out soon enough with 20 percent extra performance over the current fastest cards, and that is only for starters; wait untill they start to really get the hang of PCI-E and start to optimize the drivers for it, then you will see some fast cards, and thos 5900 Ultras and 9800 Pro XT's will be collecting dust.I guess it doesn't really matter what you buy, it is always going to be outdated soon after, but this isn't your ordinary sort of update, it is a whole new port upgrade which will change the way the Future Graphic cards are designed and the way they play. Go and have a look at Nvidia.com or ATI's website and search under PCI Express, you will be surprised !!

what a childish babble i must read here. somed day nvidia would possibly resurrect and release an even better GPU than ati's and all the nerds who like ati now will magically change their affection ,drool over nvidia's new cards and condemn ati.

ATI Release Catalyst 3.8

There's another set of great drivers u can try for your ati cards,specially if u like to overclock.It comes with an overclocker built in the control panel and a couple of other cool programs to install.They are called omega drivers.You can download the latest omega drivers at 3drage.com.The one im using is not microsoft certified installed them anyways never had a problem ,great drivers.The 3.7 catalyst drivers were great havent tried the 3.8 yet,im still using the omega drivers..Peace.

ATI Release Catalyst 3.8

Thorn, AGP has not been pushed as far as it can go at all. For example the Radeon 9800 pro runs just as fast on 6x agp or 8x agp, that goes to show that its not maxed out yet. My radeon 9700 gets the same fps at 2x agp from 6x agp. AGP IS NOT MAXED OUT YET. If it was "Maxed out" Then the next gen cards wouldn't be comming out faster because they wouldn't actually be going any faster.

ATI Release Catalyst 3.8

these drivers blow. they froze up my pc, i had to go back to 3.7. man ati drivers really blow big time. i mean, the card is great, but to actually make drivers for a vid card that blow a hard drive away is ridiculous. i had to rebuild because of this shit

ATI Release Catalyst 3.8

These Drivers suck, i have a Radeon 9600 PRO. It messed up some of my games. And the main one i play alot with mods is BattleField 1942, after installing the drivers. I couldnt hardly see the buttons in game, and everything was totally screwed up. I had to go back to Catalyst 3.7 drivers which work perfectly.

ATI drivers is SHIT get that in your head! Nvidia works better with more games. Dont argue with me on that one. Wait till the release their upcoming drivers for the FX series, you will see a big improvement in performance.Forget benchmak results cause if you had 2 PC's same specs but 1 has the latest ATI and the other with the latest Nvidia cards. And you run the same game you wont notice the damn difference cause they both are fast. Our eyes cant detect the difference in the speeds the cards have, if we watch both we will probable say its the same speed.
