DirectX 8.0 by NVidia?

NVIDIA Corporation today announced it developed and licensed enabling 3D features to Microsoft Corp. for their new DirectX 8.0 3D application program interface (API). NVIDIA contributions were in the areas of programmable vertex shaders, programmable pixel shaders, and rect/tri-patch support for high order surfaces. These features allow software content creators to use more elaborate artwork and flexible 3D rendering techniques in their applications and games.

"As a result of these new features, DirectX 8.0 will enable a new level of 3D graphics applications, and new GPUs, including NVIDIA's, bringing new 3D rendering and shading techniques to life," said Chris Jones, vice president of the Windows Client Division at Microsoft. "NVIDIA has been a great help in developing DirectX 8.0 as it is a leader in graphics technology."

DirectX 8.0 is Microsoft's latest and most advanced version of its popular 3D API that enables developers to write software for a wide variety of multimedia hardware including graphics, audio, video, networking, and input devices designed for PCs. NVIDIA and Microsoft worked closely during the development of DirectX 8.0 to jointly promote the API throughout the development community.

"NVIDIA's goal is to advance the state of the art in graphics technology, " said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO for NVIDIA. "DirectX 8.0 will enable stunning experiences on Windows platforms and will quickly become the industry standard for graphics and multimedia applications. Our cooperation with Microsoft will drive rapid adoption of these NVIDIA graphics innovations by making them standard on Microsoft platforms industry-wide."

This agreement is part of a relationship between the two companies, aimed at delivering a lifelike interactive 3D experience. Other activities include co-training of Microsoft DirectX developers, DirectX VA development, and development of two key processors, the Media Communications Processor (MCP) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), for Microsoft's highly anticipated Xbox.

Microsoft may suck hard but the only reason Nvidia and others are pairing up with them is that Microsoft are the biggest software company in the world and they can make a SHIT LOAD of money out of making a deal with them!

I recently had a problem with my drivers for OpenGL (That f**king GLSetup program... NEVER RUN IT IT ONLY SCREWS UP YOUR COMPUTER!)I could only run my games in DirectX... I recenly reinstalled Windows and got new drivers and GL works now GL is Way f**king better than DirectX! So anyone who says OpenGl sux is sadly dillusional and needs serious help!

Yet more proof the Nvidia is going to be around for a long time, what with 3DFX going into Independant Business and most other 3D companies being leagues behind Nvidia (well when the NV20 is out they will be)

DirectX 8.0 by NVidia?

OPENGL is a dying breed, many more apps and games are going to Direct 3D, so this latest advancement, with Nivida's help is a great boost to kill of the stragler and making the 3D Enviornments on all computers Direct 3D

so Nivdia team up with micosoft hu? this must have been a big decision for Nivdia. Direct X v8.0 will obviously become the industry standard. it's nice to see something done by a company that actually know's what they are doing. good by open GL.. hello 3D!!

DirectX 8.0 by NVidia?

Sounds good, but when are the DX8.0 drivers comming? when can we expect DX8.0 Games? They will run perfect, but it's still a long way we have to travel, before we get where we want to go. And by then a newer version will be out. With the same problems.

There is no question that NVidia is a, if not the, major player in the 3D hardware field. Their involvement with the production of the DirectX 8 api difinitely places DirectX in a positive light. However, DirectX 8 running on a system with a GeForce based card coupled with an ASUS motherboard, turns out to be a bad mix for players of Mechwarrior4. As stated in the readme file, NVidia is aware of the problem and is trying to resolve this. Since discovering that NVidia had a hand in the developement of this version of the api, I hope this means I'll be able to enjoy Mech4 soon without the lockups. Hopefully it won't take 3 months.

Im ex fan of 3dfx :-( but now i gotGeForce 256 ddr /with dx8nv ;-)/For example: VooDoo 5500 under 3d mark 2000 v11 on my 733 pIII with 256 ram gives: 3200p, and now with GF: 4280p, WHAT abysm a? :-). 3dfx lost THE WAR /with these big prizes :-(/And look in the game Sacrifice /Shiny/VooDoo 5500 is making mistakes with theterrain and the skins of the creatures. And for last:For these who work with agp x2, set inyour bios AGP aperture size to 256 thisis the solution I swear, and the GF willwork properly /no texture crashes/

And one interesting:Celeron fc-pga 566 with converter fromMSI with motgerboard:CT-6BTM /chaintech/ withlast bios flashes not working in 1.7v,AND WORKING ONLY IN 1.65v /and clockedto 706_mhz 83/8.5/ its working like rocket, and it's very stable :-))with VooDoo 2000 clocked 143-178 its giving results in 3d Mark 2000 v11:2967.1.VooDoo 3 and UP classes= comaptibility2.Geforce 256 and UP= performance with little incompatibility /in games especialy in the old games/Im think SO:the reason is DISLOYALTY comepition :ppVooDoo is deliberate card!

DirectX 8.0 by NVidia?

OpenGL is only good for 3DFX cards it is faster and have better image quality than other graphics cards(!WITH OPENGL) if you are owner of Voodoo KEEP DX7A on your 'puter but if you have NVIDIA or MATROX i think you should update your Direct X (I have matrox G200 and it DX8 give me ability to run COUNTER-STRIKE with 1024x768 res.!! with AMD K6-2 400mhz[that was bug version] and 64mb [CAS-2])... BUT if you listen much music on your computer and you have a Surround sound card i think that you update DX to 8

DirectX 8.0 by NVidia?

Well, I've got a voodoo3 and it aint too bad, but i've also got a Geforce 256 DDR and it is amazing in both opengl and directx. Anyone who hasn't got a geforce and is sticking up for 3dfx - shut the f**k up - the geforce is miles better and much quicker. NVidia Rox!

A few things need to be looked at when evaluating the relationship between Microsoft and Nvidia. First, Microsoft has been looking for ways to free itself from Intel for years... the releationship is, at best, awkward. Second, Nvidia has started showing signs that it is interested in expanding their chip business. This expansion will, for certian, include products that will compete with Intel's motherboard chip sets. Because of the efficiency of the current Nvidia chips some believe that Nvidia could take Intel head on in the processor market. While I believe that Nvidia could make such a move, I believe that they are planning a move towards full-functioning embeded chips (computer on a chip). This market is huge, much larger than the size of the x86 market, and will continue to grow.

Hi,i have Direct X 8.0(a) on my system(Athlon, Asus Mainb, Asus Geforce 2 MX, 256 MB, Win 98 SE) and till this time the computer is running with much graphicproblems. Nvidia driver is the newest (6.50) and Direct x 8.0a also. the dissolution 1024*768 for example is out of control. i recommend the version 7.0a for all who have not a geforce 3 card and not an exemplar of a newest game.
